Josh Deane, Head of Product at Bungie, posted a response refuting a post by an X user who claimed, “If ‘Marathon’ isn’t a success, ‘Destiny 2’ can’t be restored.” He clarified that there is no need for “donations,” stating, “Just play whatever interests you.”

Status Update on the ‘Destiny 2’ Restoration Plan

In September, the company published a blog post stating that it “hasn’t let go of the ‘Destiny’ series yet” and announced plans to restore content that is no longer playable in ‘Destiny 2.’

In a blog post newly published on October 30 via Steam news and other channels, Deane explained the current status of this restoration, stating that the company aims to “provide transparent updates on a regular basis.” According to the post, the team is currently in the preparatory phase to confirm that legacy content can be ported without compromising quality.

The blog post also emphasized that the project has only just begun. It is expected that the preparatory phase will conclude in early 2027, and it will take approximately another 12 months from that point to complete the porting work. The post also clarified that at the 2026 TGA (The Game Awards), they “will not make any new announcements or suddenly release a logo to surprise the world.”

Denying Claims That “Donations” Are Needed

In response to the above announcement, X user SwiftSTB called for fans to make “donations,” stating, “Since they’re claiming that ‘Destiny 2’ cannot be restored unless ‘Marathon’ succeeds, we need to support the December ‘Marathon’ ‘Symbiosis’ update.” He cited the following passage from the blog post as his basis:

“It is precisely the rapid evolution of ‘Marathon’ and its transition to a sustainable state that will be the driving force behind our future. With ‘Marathon’ scheduled for updates in December and March, this is a critical time that will shape the future of Bungie as a whole, so let’s encourage one another.”

However, Mr. Deane immediately responded to this post, stating, “It seems my intentions were not conveyed correctly, and that is my fault.” He clearly refuted SwiftSTB’s claim, stating that plans for *Destiny* would not be influenced by *Marathon*.

Furthermore, Deane added, “Whatever it is, please play whatever interests you,” conveying that there’s no need to feel obligated to spend money or time on the company’s games as a form of “donation.”
