Cloud Imperium Games (CIG) has announced that the upcoming update for the SFMMO *Star Citizen*, originally titled “Alpha 4.11,” has been reclassified as the “Alpha 5.0” major update.

The update has been designated a major update due to the introduction of numerous new technologies; the first installment will be “Nyx I” in the Nyx system.

Cloud Imperium Games (CIG), the developer and publisher of the game, reported this decision on the official forums.

In “Alpha 5.0,” the team will utilize Genesis data to distribute locations across planetary surfaces, with the goal of enabling large-scale expansion of the universe.New technologies include “Starchitect,” which introduces a procedural world-building system that assembles worlds from modular components; “Planet Tech V5,” which overhauls planetary generation and rendering methods to deliver richer environments and improved performance; and a new system for balancing server populations and placing residents appropriate for their surroundings.Numerous new technologies are scheduled to be implemented, including “Population Manager,” which lays the foundation for more dynamic interactions.

According to CIG, the decision to rename the feature was made to reflect the importance of the new technologies and features it brings together.

Also scheduled for implementation in this update are “Contract Boards,” which offer missions for factions and guilds at a wide range of scales—from local areas to regions and even star systems—and “DGS Planet Subdivision,” which evolves the server mesh by dividing planets and moons into smaller, dynamically assigned server regions.

These new technologies will first be implemented on “Nyx I” in the Nyx system, so players who want to experience these features as soon as possible may want to set that system as their home.

The last major update took place in December 2024—nearly two years ago—and brought significant changes to both the game content and the core technology supporting it, including the addition of Pyro, the second star system after the Stanton system, and the introduction of Server Meshing V1.

The new technologies scheduled for implementation this time—including base-building features that players can manage themselves—are all foundational to future development. Consequently, while players have expressed high expectations, there are also concerns regarding stability changes accompanying the major update and the release timing of version 1.0.

“Star Citizen” can be played by downloading the launcher from the official website and purchasing the game package; the single-player spin-off “Squadron 42” is scheduled for release on Steam for PC in the second quarter of 2027.
