The “Tokyo Game Show 2026 (TGS2026)” was held at Makuhari Messe. At the Koei Tecmo Games booth, Team NINJA’s *Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember* was available for hands-on play.
Since I had the opportunity to play the demo at the event, I’ll be focusing on my hands-on impressions of the game’s action mechanics and the improvements made since the previous installment.
What Is *Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember*?
*Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember* is the sequel to *Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty*, a high-difficulty action RPG developed by Team NINJA and set in a dark fantasy world inspired by the Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
The series’ most distinctive feature is its combat system—which seamlessly blends offense and defense—centered around “Hua Jing,” a technique that parries enemy attacks with split-second timing.Rather than simply dodging attacks and waiting for an opening, players can parry the enemy’s attacks themselves and immediately launch a counterattack, creating a gameplay experience where you can maintain an aggressive offensive stance even within a high-difficulty action game.
While building on these fundamentals, this installment introduces new actions such as “Ougi” (Phoenix Techniques), which harness the power of the phoenix, as well as aerial combat. Furthermore, iconic battlefields from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms—such as the “Battle of Changban” and the “Battle of Red Cliffs”—are depicted as vast open fields.
Action That Blends Offense and Defense, Expanded Through “Hua Jing” and “Ougi”
Just like in the previous title, the satisfying feeling of chaining attacks while executing “Hua Jing” remains intact. In this installment, it’s easier to transition from an attack into “Hua Jing,” allowing you to maintain a seamless offensive while countering enemy counterattacks.
Additionally, “Phoenix Techniques” have been introduced as a new feature. Phoenix Techniques are a system that borrows the power of the phoenix to enhance various actions such as dashing, guarding, jumping, light footwork, and Hua Jing.
For example, with the “Phoenix Technique Jump,” you can time your movement to make a wide evasion of an enemy’s attack while circling around to their back. During this hands-on demo, it proved effective even against enemies who were difficult to break down when facing them head-on with a shield raised, and I was particularly impressed by how it allowed me to turn enemy attacks into opportunities for myself in a way different from traditional Hua Jing.

■ Three-Dimensional Combat That Allows You to Keep Attacking Even in the Air
Aerial combat has also been significantly enhanced in this title. In addition to aerial attacks, certain martial arts techniques and Xian techniques can be used in mid-air, and you can even parry enemy attacks with “Aerial Hua Jing” while jumping.
As a result, jumping doesn’t leave you completely defenseless. I was able to enjoy more dynamic and fast-paced combat by linking attacks from the ground to the air, and then using “Aerial Hua Jing” to deflect an opponent’s counterattack mid-air and transition back into an offensive.
What struck me most after actually playing was how the “satisfaction of a well-executed move” is woven throughout the combat. The distinct sense of impact when a Hua Jing or Huang Ji technique succeeds flows seamlessly into the next attack, so even though the difficulty is high, I never felt like I was constantly on the defensive.

Rich in Action, Yet Intuitive Controls
At first glance, the increased number of available actions might make the controls seem complex, but in this hands-on session, the control scheme was based on the R1 button, allowing players to perform a variety of actions by combining it with corresponding buttons.
Although there seemed to be a lot to learn at first, once I actually tried it out, I found it easy to access each action and was able to get the hang of the controls relatively smoothly even within the short trial period. I was also impressed that, despite the wide variety of actions, the controls didn’t become overly cumbersome.

Set in locations like Nagasaka and Red Cliffs, change the course of battle with your own strategies
The game’s setting has also expanded significantly from the previous title. This installment features iconic Three Kingdoms battlefields such as the “Battle of Changban” and the “Battle of Red Cliffs,” each constructed as a vast open field. In the TGS 2026 demo, I was able to experience a portion of “Changban.”
There’s more than one way to approach these battles. While you can rely on your skills to take on powerful enemies head-on, you can also explore the field and plant your own army’s flags to lower enemy morale and gain the upper hand. The fact that you can actively reshape the course of the battle through exploration and capturing strongholds—rather than simply defeating enemies to advance—seems to be a unique and compelling aspect of this game.
As a fan of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, I found it incredibly appealing not just to gaze at familiar battlefields, but to actively reshape the course of the battle as I conquered the terrain myself.
The character progression system, which makes it easy to switch weapons, also left a positive impression
In terms of character development, the design is consciously structured so that players aren’t forced to stick with a single weapon. According to the explanation provided during the demo, while there are synergy effects between growth stats and weapon types, players have relatively free rein to raise or lower their stats, making it easy to adjust their development strategy to suit the weapon they’re using.
As a result, when you think, “I want to try this weapon next,” it’s easy to switch to a different weapon type, and it’s great that you can experiment with multiple weapons to find a fighting style that suits you. In high-difficulty action games, the hassle of rebuilding your character often acts as a barrier to switching weapons, but in this title, I got the impression that it’s easy to try out various weapons and fighting styles.

The powerful enemy “Cao Ren” awaits at the end of the demo
At the end of the TGS 2026 demo, “Cao Ren” awaits as the boss. According to the explanation given at the venue, this version of Cao Ren has been tuned to be slightly stronger specifically for the demo event, and he proved to be a formidable opponent during the brief play session.
Additionally, demo participants received a lenticular pin, and players who managed to defeat Cao Ren were awarded an original T-shirt. I also tried my hand at defeating him, but unfortunately, I wasn’t able to win within the time limit.

What left the strongest impression after actually playing *Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember* was not simply the increased number of actions, but the fact that each action contributes to the “satisfaction of maintaining a constant offensive.”The fluid sequence of parrying enemy attacks with *Hua Jing*, turning the tide with *Huang Ji*, and chaining attacks into the air made me feel a clear evolution while retaining the appeal of the previous title.
Another appealing aspect is the availability of strategic options—such as planting flags to lower enemy morale—that allow you to gain an advantage without relying solely on your action skills. This game promises to be enjoyable not only for players who excel at high-difficulty action sequences but also for those who want to explore and develop their characters while discovering their own unique strategies.
*Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember* is scheduled for release on March 4, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam, and other platforms.Additionally, an alpha demo featuring a portion of the early-game “Battle of Changban” is available until September 30. If this preview piqued your interest, why not try out the game’s signature “constant offense” action for yourself?
