Set in a labyrinth teeming with supernatural creatures, this game challenges players to fight their way through while strengthening the protagonist, “Retra.” We were fortunate enough to get an early hands-on with the game, so here are some of its highlights, including the action-packed combo system and the depth of its diverse builds and strategic gameplay!

Finally Releasing on November 5! A Recap of *Mugen Sakura Rōkaku*, Featuring a Brunette Beauty with Cat-Ear Hood

*Mugen Sakura Rōkaku* is a bishōjo roguelike action game developed by Denneko Yūgi and published by Shochiku Games. You play as “Retra,” a tanned beauty whose trademark is her cat-ear hood, as you conquer a dreamlike labyrinth teeming with various enemies and bosses.
The game’s biggest appeal is, without a doubt, the design and graphics of the protagonist, Retra. Meticulous attention has been paid to every detail—from modeling and cutscenes to combat animations and visual effects—perfectly capturing Retra’s lively and spirited personality.

Additionally, by collecting “Attributes”—power-up items obtained after exploring maps and battling—you can improve your stats and learn new skills (Arts). The game features not only strategic depth in deciding how to progress through dungeons and build your character but also high replayability, offering a different experience every time.

The crowdfunding campaign, which launched on CAMPFIRE on September 30, has not only raised approximately 1.3 million yen—far exceeding its goal—but has also seen over 50,000 wishlist additions on Steam, demonstrating the high level of anticipation for this title following its long development period.
The action feels great, and simple combos deliver a real sense of satisfaction! There are also elements for managing your build and the state of the stage.

During this hands-on demo, after completing the tutorial, I was able to take on Dungeon Area 1: “The Cherry Blossom Tower.” The tutorial provides hands-on training in a series of basic controls, including normal attacks, strong attacks, combos that lead into Arts, dodging, shielding, and Shield Burst.

“Sakura Tower” consists of five floors, and players can choose which square to move to. Since each square features different elements—such as enemy battles, shops where you can purchase items, event squares where something happens, and squares where you can recover HP—strategizing the order in which you explore is crucial.

Additionally, as you explore the map, a gauge called “Dream Depth” gradually increases. Dream Depth rises with actions such as moving to new squares or restoring HP, and once it reaches a certain threshold, a debuff known as a “Depth Effect” is applied.
Since you can remove this debuff by consuming a certain percentage of your HP, it’s crucial to balance risk and reward—deciding whether to take risks to acquire more items and buffs, or to proceed with minimal actions.

In combat, you fight by utilizing skills called “Arts,” but which Arts you can equip is completely random. Since they vary in terms of attack type—such as area-of-effect or single-target damage—and their attributes, you can choose the ones that best suit your playstyle. Additionally, you can equip up to four Arts at a time, and acquiring the same Art multiple times further enhances its damage and effects.

You can also acquire enhancement items called “Attributes,” which come in a wide variety of rarities and effects—some boost your stats, while others grant additional effects to your actions. You may come across shops that sell powerful Attributes, so be sure to check them out when you see one.

Furthermore, boss battles not only feature a large number of minor enemies but also a boss waiting at the end whose HP and attack power are on a completely different level compared to other enemies. The boss of the Cherry Blossom Pavilion, “Gajūmaru,” is characterized by its massive wings and fiery body, and it unleashes wide-area attacks such as flame jets and sweeping strikes.

The first time I took on this challenge, I couldn’t block all of its attacks and was soundly defeated… but for my second attempt, I made sure to gather plenty of Arts and Attributes and went in fully prepared. Additionally, in this game, you can build up your Tension Gauge during battle to enter a powered-up state called “Over Tension.”
While in Over Tension, you earn AP more easily, allowing you not only to chain Arts together but also to unleash the powerful special move “Over Arts”! With a spectacular sequence where Retra lands a flurry of consecutive attacks, she deals massive damage to Gajumaru’s HP.

Just as we successfully defeated Gajumaru and arrived at the second area, “The Riverbank at the Village Boundary,” time ran out—a real shame. Since the enemies that appear seem to vary by area, I’m eager to see what encounters await us further ahead.

This time, we’ve brought you a play report on *Mugen Sakurakaku*. The action feels smooth and allows you to chain combos easily, providing a sense of exhilaration. The game’s appeal lies in its design—which showcases the protagonist, Retra—through her various motions and the visual effects of her Over Arts. On the other hand, there were moments during combat where I struggled with camera control.
Another standout feature is the build system, which leverages a wide variety of Arts and Attributes. The design allows players to adjust the difficulty themselves while balancing risk and reward—for example, by removing applied debuffs—making it a great system that lets casual players enjoy the roguelike experience as well.
*Mugen Sakura Rōkaku* is scheduled for release on November 5 for PC (Steam) and Nintendo Switch. A demo is available on the Steam store page, so be sure to check it out if you’re interested!
