Independent game developer kokon has released gameplay footage and screenshots from their new horror adventure game *Casey (KC)*, currently in development for PC and smartphones.

Girls who want to be “friends” but end up hurting each other

This title is a “Cute Aggression Gothic Horror Adventure” that depicts the twisted friendships of young girls and the tragedy that awaits them. Character design and illustrations are handled by Hito Ba, an illustrator known for his decadent artistic style.

The protagonist is “Liddel,” a girl who cannot suppress her urge to harm her own body. Worried about her future, her father takes her to a mansion on the outskirts of town, where they’ve been told someone might be able to help her.

There, she meets Casey, a “talking severed head” with a spoiled and violent personality.

As she spends her days recuperating at the mansion, Ridel gradually becomes “friends” with Casey and the other girls living there. However, as their bonds deepen, the mansion’s hidden dark past and the darkness lurking within each of their hearts begin to surface.

From Ridel’s perspective, the player must carefully make choices to avoid damaging her relationships with the girls. Even when she wants to get along with them, she ends up hurting them; and precisely because she wants to get along, she ends up getting hurt herself. These precarious relationships may lead to an unexpected tragedy.

The key to the story is Casey, a bizarre figure in the form of a blood-soaked severed head. Her true identity and the reason she haunts Ridel will likely be revealed as the story unfolds.

The UI, reminiscent of self-harm… A cruel story told through fairy-tale-like prose

The game system follows the classic visual novel format, where the story branches based on your choices; there are no action or minigame elements. With an estimated playtime of about one hour, it’s a title you can enjoy in a relatively short amount of time.

At the same time, it features unique artistic touches, such as a menu screen at the bottom of the display that incorporates imagery reminiscent of wrist-cutting, and fairy-tale-style text that makes heavy use of hiragana.

Additionally, the artwork by Hito-ba—which is both cute and grotesque—is a highlight. Contrary to the appearance of the adorable girls, the game incorporates extreme depictions such as self-harm and bloodshed.

“Casey” is scheduled for release in spring 2027 as a free-to-play game for PC and smartphones. There are also plans to offer it as a browser game that can be played without downloading.
