The independent game development circle YORUROJI has released a major update to the free version of *MARY - The Rescue of Princess Mary*, currently available on unityroom, to celebrate the game surpassing 10,000 Steam wishlist entries.
A text adventure where a single character can send the story in an unexpected direction
This text adventure follows a hero who sets out on a quest to rescue Princess Mary, who has been kidnapped by the Demon King.
Its most distinctive feature is the ability to add any single character of your choice to the button that determines the protagonist’s actions. If that single character changes the meaning of the phrase, the story’s progression will shift accordingly.
It’s up to the player whether to follow the classic storyline, rewrite the text to make the adventure easier for the hero, or deliberately create bizarre sentences to enjoy unexpected twists.
The full Steam version of this game was announced in August 2026. As mentioned in a previous article, the game begins when you add “me” to “hajiru” (to be ashamed) on the title screen to make it “hajimeru” (to start). The Unityroom version, which had surpassed 530,000 page views at the time, appears to continue attracting attention even after the announcement of the full Steam version.
The unityroom version has been updated to support smartphone play, a feature that was highly requested. Pressing a button brings up a simple on-screen keyboard, allowing you to add a single character just like in the PC version.
New hidden endings have been added to routes that previously had no special developments and required difficult conditions to reach. There are now a total of six endings: four regular endings and two hidden endings.
An additional 103 branching paths—each triggered by adding a single character—have been added, bringing the total to 544. New branching paths have also been added to the title screen, and new still images have been included.
