Molleindustria has released an update that removes generative AI voiceovers from the adventure game *Future? No Thanks!*. The company has also announced that it will issue refunds to any purchasers who feel they have been let down.
AI Usage Information Disclosed Retrospectively
Released on September 4, this title is a story-driven open-world adventure. Set in an eco-socialist utopia, it follows a cantankerous elderly man who has decided to undergo euthanasia as he spends his final day.
Prior to release, the game made headlines when the developer voiced frustration that Steam’s review process was taking longer than expected due to polygon nude scenes.
Regarding this title, the Steam store page was updated after release to disclose the use of AI. In an official blog post published on October 17 (local time), the developers explained that while they did not use “vibe coding” in the creation of this game—which satirizes generative AI and its irresponsible use—they did use ChatGPT and Claude for final touches and debugging.
At the same time, they argued that once AI-generated code is incorporated, it is difficult to identify and remove, and that Steam does not require developers to disclose AI-assisted coding in the first place.
They also revealed that generative AI was used for some of the voice recordings.
AI Voice Removed
In an update released today, October 24, the voice clips generated by AI were replaced with human voices. The developers stated, “The game is worse than before, but by at most about 0.001%.”
In an official blog post published on October 23 (local time), Paolo Pedercini reported that he had come under attack on social media for using generative AI and reiterated that Steam does not require developers to disclose the use of generative AI for coding assistance. He also noted that developers of many people’s favorite indie games are simply remaining silent on the matter.
Although he reportedly faced a great deal of ridicule and insults, he declared that he would issue refunds to any buyers who felt betrayed. He asked them to send their PayPal or Venmo account information and provided his email address in the blog post.
"Future? No Thanks!" is currently available on Windows and Mac via Steam and itch.io.
