Rumors about a sequel to Valve’s “Half-Life” have been surfacing and fading for a long time… but at “GameSoundCon 2026,” a Valve developer “accidentally” mentioned the project’s codename, sparking a buzz.
“Even HLX has its own version of…” Did a Valve Developer Mention the Existence of *Half-Life 3*?
The remark in question came during a developer panel at “GameSoundCon 2026,” held on October 20 and 21 (local time). The event featured presentations on game music, sound design, and technology, and the lineup included several Valve staff members.
Three Valve staff members—composer Mike Morasky and sound designers David Feise and Carlye Nyte—took the stage at the conference. It appears that Mike Morasky was the one who made the slip of the tongue.
Valve’s session, titled “Valve's Approach to an Open and Flexible Audio Engine,” covered the company’s “Source 2 audio engine” technology—which has powered 11 games released over more than 15 years—as well as its scalability, the history of the engine, the transition to an open system, and its pros and cons.
While discussing sound management and optimization, the speaker noted, “In fact, ‘Deadlock’ should be utilizing its own version of HDR functionality.” He continued, “There’s also a custom version of ‘HLX,’ and various other features as well.”
This “HLX” has long been rumored to be the codename for the development project of the latest *Half-Life* title, *Half-Life 3*, and rumors about it have been surfacing and fading away, causing the community to experience a rollercoaster of emotions.
Overseas media outlets, including IGN and PC Gamer, have picked up on this slip of the tongue during the presentation, pointing out a moment immediately after Mike’s remark when David, sitting next to him, turned his head away. Additionally, GameSpot highlighted a moment where someone called out, “Good job, you only said HLX once.”
The community continues to chase the phantom of *Half-Life 3*… In the past, some users even began performing “mysterious rituals”

Topics surrounding *Half-Life 3* have kept the community hopeful for many years now, but Valve has yet to make an official announcement. It’s been quite some time since *Half-Life 2* was released in 2004 and *Half-Life: Alyx*, released for VR, in 2020.
With references to “HLX” found in the source code, among other things, people have repeatedly claimed “Half-Life 3 confirmed.” However, there were already joke ads as early as 2016, and at the 2025 TGA, users finally went so far as to perform a mysterious ritual…As a result, the fact that it “hasn’t been announced or released” is becoming something of a meme.
Even at the 2026 Summer Game Fest, when Jeff Keely posted a GIF of rising steam, some users read too much into it, thinking, “Steam = Valve = ‘Half-Life 3’!?”—but, of course, it wasn’t announced.
However, since this time it’s not just users stretching the meaning or digging through source code, but an actual mention from a Valve developer, the community is placing high hopes on this as a highly credible “Half-Life 3 confirmed.”
Will it finally be announced at the TGA at the end of the year, or will this buzz fade away...? What does the future hold for “Half-Life 3”?
