The official X (formerly Twitter) account for the free file-sharing service “uploader.jp (getuploader.com / ux.getuploader.com)” announced that the service will be discontinued as of November 25, 2026.

According to the copyright notice on its official website, “uploader.jp” has been in operation since 2006 and is one of Japan’s largest free file-hosting services, allowing anyone to create and use their own personal file storage space at no cost. According to the official announcement, the decision to discontinue the service was made due to recent changes in usage patterns and various other circumstances.

At 11:59 PM on November 25, 2026—the day the service ends—all data, including uploaded files, will be deleted.

From “Oblivion” and “Fallout 3” to “Mount & Blade”—A Major Hub That Supported the Japanese Localization and Mod Culture of Overseas PC Games

“uploader.jp” and the group of upload services under related domains such as “getuploader.com” have served as an extremely important infrastructure for Japanese PC gamers and mod creators for approximately 20 years.

Of particular significance is the distribution of Japanese localization patches and mods for foreign PC games created by volunteers. Long before current platforms like the Steam Workshop and Nexus Mods became widespread and established in Japan, numerous dedicated upload services operated in conjunction with domestic community wikis and message boards.

Specific titles include *The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion*,*Fallout 3*, *Fallout: New Vegas*, and *The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim*—all Bethesda Softworks titles—for which Japanese localization patches and related files were hosted.

For example, the uploader for the “Fallout 3 DLC Japanese Localization Project” alone recorded over 1 million cumulative downloads.

*Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition*

In addition to these, the site hosts Japanese localization patches and related files for classic RPGs like *Baldur’s Gate*,the *S.T.A.L.K.E.R.* series, and the *Mount & Blade* series—many of which do not officially include Japanese, require significant effort to install a Japanese version, or necessitate modifications to the official Japanese localization—are hosted on this service.

Even in recent years, it has remained an active repository for Japanese localization files for user-created and overseas mods for games like *RimWorld* and *Minecraft*, as well as volunteer-translated patches for the latest overseas indie games.

From “Elona,” “CardWirth,” and “Wudita” to “MMD” and “AviUtl”—Its Impact on the Japanese Freeware and Doujin Game Communities

“uploader.jp” has long served as a hub not only for foreign games but also for the domestic free game, doujin software, and creative tool communities.

Notable examples include the numerous uploaders serving as repositories for related files—such as replacement assets for the acclaimed free roguelike RPG *Elona*—and fan-created scenarios and assets for the long-running fantasy RPG *CardWirth*.

Furthermore, much of the long-standing free software culture—including the distribution of game files and assets such as character sprites created with “WOLF RPG Editor (UDITA)” and the “RPG Maker” series, as well as add-on distribution for the transportation simulation “Simutrans”—has relied on this service.

Furthermore, its use extends beyond the gaming genre; it has been widely utilized across the entire creative community on the Japanese internet—including for distributing models and accessories for the 3DCG animation tool “MikuMikuDance (MMD)” and related files for the video editing software “AviUtl.”

Even for commercial, doujin, and freeware titles containing adult content,it has been utilized by diverse communities with their own mod cultures, such as “Custom Made 3D2,” “Custom Order Made 3D2 (COM3D2),” the “Senran Kagura” series, text-based simulation games derived from the “era” series, and the strategy sim “Raijin” series.More recently, there are examples of its use in titles such as the 3D dungeon RPG *Dungeon and Bride*.

The Moment “History” Disappears

Until very recently, the Japanese gaming community rarely used major overseas sites like Nexus to upload created files; however, this site has been invaluable as a place to share small-scale translation files and for titles that lack a Workshop feature for overseas games. The same was true, of course, for titles whose infrastructure was originally built solely within Japan, and the impact of this platform is immeasurable.

Particularly within the Japanese gaming community, many files include licensing restrictions against mirroring or reposting. With the deletion of all data at 11:59 PM on November 25—including files from creators who have ceased updates and can no longer be contacted, as well as walkthroughs andJapanese localization wikis—it is expected that the deletion of all data at 11:59 PM on November 25 will make a vast number of valuable assets and materials from the history of Japanese PC gaming and internet culture difficult to obtain.

Users who have necessary files or data they manage will likely need to take measures such as backing up or transferring their data before the service ends.
