On October 23, 2026, Square Enix announced that the RPG *Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven* had surpassed 1 million in cumulative global shipments and digital downloads.
This marks the first time a title in the series has reached the one-million milestone in 29 years, since *SaGa Frontier*.
Released on October 24, 2024 (October 25 for the Steam version), this title is a complete full-3D remake of *Romancing SaGa 2*, which was originally released in December 1993. It reached the one-million milestone just shy of two years after its release.
This is the first time a *SaGa* series title has reached one million copies sold in 29 years, since *SaGa Frontier* was released in 1997. The original *Romancing SaGa 2* also achieved million-seller status upon its release in 1993, meaning the remake has now matched that milestone.

While retaining series-exclusive systems such as “Inspiration” and “Formations,” this title enhances playability through the addition of “Combos”—which allow party members to unleash their skills as a single, combined move—as well as a revamped growth system and new difficulty settings. The vast world, previously rendered in pixel art, has been revamped in full 3D, and event scenes are now fully voiced.
Akitoshi Kawazu: “Selling a million copies over 30 years ago has a different meaning than it does today.”
Akitoshi Kawazu, General Director of the “SaGa” series, appeared in a video celebrating the milestone. He brought a bottle of 1996 champagne and, smiling, said, “I just happened to have some from 1996—30 years ago,” as he raised a toast (video, around 2:51).
Mr. Kawazu touched on the changing times, noting, “Back then, only a few hundred home console titles were released each year. Nowadays, that many probably come out in a single day,” and praised the achievement given the abundance of free games available (video, around 3:14).
“Reaching 1 million copies sold amid a massive array of choices for users. Moreover, the fact that user reviews improved and sales grew over the course of more than a year after release—I truly believe this is a testament to the efforts of everyone involved in its creation, so I think we can be proud of this achievement” (video, around 3:14).
The game’s producer also appeared in the video, reflecting on pre-release pre-order numbers by saying, “It really didn’t look like it was going to take off.” He went on to explain that word-of-mouth praise—with people saying, “This game is fun!”—spread after launch, which ultimately led to this milestone.

Regarding the game, Mr. Kawazu commented, “Since various new elements have been added, I’m both excited and, to be honest, a little nervous to see how players will react to them.”
