Shanghai Alice Reprise has once again announced via its official X account that the Nintendo Switch 2 physical edition of *Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic ~ the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil.* will include a game card.
A “Bonus Text” video by ZUN is also now available
This title is a vertical bullet-hell shooter reimagined for modern audiences, primarily based on the graphics and background music from *Touhou Koumakyou ~ the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil.*, which was distributed at “Comic Market 62” in 2002.
In response to user requests to “keep a physical copy on hand,” the game is scheduled for release in physical editions for both the Switch and Switch 2. Following multiple inquiries received via the official X account, the developers have reaffirmed that the Switch 2 physical edition will include a game card.
In addition to the “New Classic” game card, the physical edition will include the “Classic” version—which recreates the 2002 game as faithfully as possible—and a download code for the soundtrack player. It will also feature a reversible jacket in the style of the 2002 *Koumakyou* and stickers featuring *Koumakyou* characters and bullet patterns.
Additionally, Shanghai Alice Reprise’s official YouTube channel is currently streaming a video in which ZUN reflects on the “bonus text” from the original game. He discusses his state of mind during production, as well as his intention to convey the values and atmosphere of that era through *New Classic*.
In the video, he also touches on the backstory behind the extra stages, as well as the character designs and origins of each character. He discusses the “human-like qualities” he infused into Marisa, and how he created an element of surprise through the contrast between Stage 1 boss Rumia’s intimidating aura and her silly side.
The physical edition of *Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic ~ the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil.* is scheduled for release on December 17, 2026, for the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.The price is 4,400 yen (tax included) for the Switch version and 5,610 yen (tax included) for the Switch 2 version.
Additionally, the digital version is currently available for PC (Steam), PS5, Switch, and Switch 2.
