Square Enix has posted a "Notice Regarding Unauthorized Access and Account Management" on the official "Dragon Quest X" website.
Previously, on “The Lodestone,” the official information site for the MMORPG *Final Fantasy XIV*, it was announced that cases had been confirmed where unauthorized logins to Square Enix Accounts were occurring using combinations of email addresses andaccount IDs and passwords—that are believed to have been leaked from other companies’ online services—to gain unauthorized access to Square Enix accounts. This announcement reaffirms that “Dragon Quest X” is also affected.
Be Cautious If You Use the Same Password as Other Services
According to the announcement, cases have been confirmed where unauthorized logins to Square Enix accounts have occurred using combinations of email addresses, account IDs, and passwords believed to have been leaked from other companies’ online services.
The company warns that if you use the same email address, account ID, and password combination for your Square Enix account as you do for other services, you are at a higher risk of unauthorized access.
Furthermore, even if you are not using the exact same combination as on another service, the risk of unauthorized access increases if your password contains repeated letters or numbers, or is easily guessable—such as your date of birth. The company is urging affected users to change their passwords immediately.
Login Restrictions Imposed on Affected Accounts
The company states that it is implementing login restrictions on accounts suspected of being compromised to prevent further damage. If your login is restricted, an email explaining how to lift the restriction will be sent to your registered email address; users are urged to reset their password before logging in.
Recommendation to Implement One-Time Passwords
The announcement also recommends implementing one-time passwords as a measure against unauthorized access. One-time passwords are valid only for a limited time and become invalid once used to log in, making them highly effective against unauthorized access. The company states that using one-time passwords in conjunction with your existing ID and password will dramatically improve security against unauthorized access.
Furthermore, if unauthorized access continues to increase, there is a possibility that password resets will be implemented for all Square Enix accounts.
