WARNING! This article contains spoilers regarding the content of Chapter 3 in the "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4" campaign mode. Please proceed with caution.
*Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4*, scheduled for release on October 23, has already begun its early access campaign. While the game has been praised for the quality of its campaign mode, it has been revealed that the Japanese version contains content restrictions.
The brutal scene of a rebel being hanged fades to black, with specific details cut out

In the game’s campaign mode, cuts to depictions—apparently due to content restrictions—have been identified, and Mission 3, “Obey Only,” has become a hot topic on social media. This mission is depicted from the perspective of a North Korean soldier visiting a village, who interrogates civilians to find the traitor hiding among them.
Upon reviewing the international version’s content on Game*Spark, it was confirmed that at the end of this mission, players are given the choice to either hang the traitor from a tree and kill them or refuse to do so. In the international version, if you choose to refuse, your superior officer will kill you.
Even if the player is killed, the game proceeds directly to the scene where the traitor is hanged; however, players must decide whether to engage in the brutal act of hanging someone of their own volition or to experience the intense consequence of being killed for refusing to do so.
However, this choice is not available in the Japanese version. Instead, in the Japanese version, if you approach the soldier and select the “Support” command, the gameplay sequence showing the hanging is skipped, and the game jumps directly to the cutscene after the hanging has taken place.
Civilians Cannot Be Shot in Missions Played as a North Korean Soldier

During this mission, there is also a scene where you interrogate a civilian to ask about traitors. In this scene, you have the option to resolve the situation through dialogue, threaten the civilian with your gun, shoot them in the leg, or kill them.
Due to censorship restrictions in the Japanese version, you cannot kill civilians in this scene either; doing so will immediately result in mission failure.

Additionally, there is a civilian hiding underground in this mission, and the story’s progression can change depending on the choices you make regarding her. However, perhaps because the aforementioned scene of hanging the traitor was cut from the Japanese version, the story’s progression does not actually change as a result.

Furthermore, the international version includes a “Mutilation and Blood” option in the settings menu; however, according to a writer who played the Japanese version on Steam, this option was absent.

Going back to the 2009 version of *Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2* and its mission “No Russian/Interlude” (famous for the line “Kill him, he’s Russian”), the *CoD* series has historically had restrictions preventing players from killing civilians.Being forced to commit acts of brutality—or being killed for refusing to do so—is an integral part of the gaming experience. While this restriction may be due to CERO rating requirements, it is regrettable that it is enforced without any prior explanation.
Furthermore, just like the 2020 remastered version, *Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered*, the PC version is also essentially subject to these restrictions.
*Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4* is scheduled for release on October 23 for PC (Steam/Battle.net/Microsoft Store), PS5, XBOX Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. Those who pre-order or pre-purchase the Standard Digital Edition or Collector’s Edition will have early access to the campaign starting October 17.
Game*Spark has also published play reports from the beta test, so please check those out as well.
