Steam’s New Achievement System Beta: Adding DLC Won't Break "100% Completion"—Unobtainable Time-Limited Ones Don't Count

Valve has released a beta version of "Achievement Sets," a new feature that significantly overhauls Steam's achievement system.

With the introduction of Achievement Sets, improvements such as replacing “All Achievements Unlocked” with “Completed” have been implemented. A new system has been introduced that ensures the completion percentage remains at 100% even as new achievements are added.

"Completed" Status Remains Unchanged Even After DLC Releases

While recent games are played for extended periods thanks to DLC, expansions, and seasonal updates, achievements added alongside new content can be difficult to find. This has led to a problem where players who had already unlocked all achievements would see their completion status reset by updates.

The new “Achievement Sets” feature allows developers to organize in-game achievements into custom groups.

The number of sets and how they are organized—such as separating them by single-player and multiplayer modes, or by class or character—can be freely configured for each game. The way players actually play remains unchanged; however, since unlocked achievements are organized and displayed by set, it becomes easier to track your progress and identify related achievements to aim for next.

Each set has its own progress bar, and once all achievements in a set are unlocked, a “Set Complete” trophy is awarded to the player’s profile.

Even if achievements are added to a set later, your progress is retained. Since new sets are created for downloadable content (DLC), you won’t lose your previous completion status when you return to the game after a long absence—you’ll only see the new achievements available to you.

“DLC Achievement Sets” are displayed in purple

There are two types of sets: the “Base Game Achievement Set,” which includes achievements available to all players, is displayed in blue, while the “DLC Achievement Set,” which includes achievements available only to players who have purchased the DLC, is displayed in purple. DLC achievements are not included in the game’s overall progress until you gain access to that content.

While it may not change how you feel about the game being “unfinished,” this appears to resolve the issue where the game wouldn’t display 100% completion simply because you hadn’t purchased the DLC.

The “Archive” Feature Ensures Missed Limited-Time Achievements Don’t Prevent 100% Completion

Additionally, a feature has been introduced that allows developers to “archive” individual achievements or entire sets. This is designed for achievements—such as those tied to seasonal events or holidays—that can no longer be unlocked once their time period has passed.

Archived achievements will continue to appear on the profiles of players who have already unlocked them, but they won’t appear on the pages of players who were unable to unlock them. This, too, seems set to resolve the frustration of not reaching 100% due to missing time-limited achievements.

In addition, the display of achievements has been revised as follows.

  • “All Achievements Unlocked” has been renamed to “Completed,” and going forward, it will display both games you’ve cleared and games where you’ve completed achievement sets.

  • In addition to completed games, completed achievement sets can now be added to the “Perfectionist Showcase.”

  • Games played via Family Sharing now appear in your game list.

  • Friends who have played games using Family Sharing are now included as friends for comparison.

  • The presence of achievement sets is now displayed on each game’s page in the Store and Library.

Achievement sets are already available to both players and developers in the Steam client beta. The following games support achievement sets:

  • *Against the Storm*

  • *Age of Wonders 4*

  • *American Truck Simulator*

  • *Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4*

  • "Crusader Kings III"

  • 『DREDGE』

  • "Euro Truck Simulator 2"

  • "Forza Horizon 5"

  • "Flock Around"

  • "He Is Coming"

  • "LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight"

  • "Left 4 Dead 2"

  • "Portal 2"

  • "PowerWash Simulator"

  • "PowerWash Simulator 2"

  • "Team Fortress 2"

  • "Victoria 3"

In fact, 『Team Fortress 2』 already featured achievement sets for each class, as well as seasonal achievement sets for events like “Halloween” and “Christmas.”
