"This Is Enough to Buy 'GTA 6'": Hacker Who Made a Fortune Through the PS5 Bug Bounty Program Earns About 8 Million Yen for Discovering a Critical Vulnerability

A report published on the HackerOne security platform revealed that a bug worth a $50,000 (approximately 7.9 million yen) reward had been discovered through PlayStation’s bug bounty program, which primarily targets security-related issues.

"You Can Buy 'GTA 6' with the $50,000 Reward"

This bug bounty program, launched by SIE in June 2020, serves as an incentive for white-hat hackers to report security vulnerabilities and provide opportunities for their resolution. This discovery was made by 2tonejordy, who has been active on HackerOne since October 2024, and the bug in question was reportedly resolved on October 15.

Following the disclosure, jordy jokingly commented on his X account, “Now I can buy ‘GTA 6.’” He also revealed that, although it is unclear whether this was the exact bug reported this time, in September he had received a request from the PS5 jailbreak (removal of manufacturer restrictions) community to withhold certain reports.

While jordy—the person responsible for this discovery—is believed to have made the discovery out of his own interest in PS5 jailbreaking, it is also a fact that it led to the resolution of a serious security vulnerability. This is likely to be of great significance as one of the valuable case studies in security measures for the online community.
