"Star Citizen" Offline Mod Development Halted Following Official Request—Questions Raised About Early "Moddable" Claims

Development of a mod to make the SFMMO "Star Citizen" playable offline has been halted at the request of the developer.

The related subreddit was also removed due to a DMCA takedown notice, and there have been criticisms regarding the mod’s initial promotional claims.

The mod whose development has been halted is “ChrisWareOffline,” an offline mod for *Star Citizen* created by cloudyyrust.

This mod was designed to bypass the connection to official servers, enabling fully solo play in an offline environment within the game.

However, the developer, cloudyyrust, announced the end of development on the mod’s official Discord channel.

According to the announcement, Cloud Imperium Games (CIG), the developer of *Star Citizen*, contacted him regarding files included in the mod, and he fully complied with their requests. As a result, the GitHub repository, all download sources, and the build-related channels on the mod’s official Discord were removed, and the Discord server itself was shut down.It was explicitly stated that no further releases or download sources would be made available.

At the same time, they are urging users to refrain from using files they have already downloaded, distribution archives, derivative works, and reuploads, and to delete such content.

Additionally, a post regarding this mod was deleted from the “Star Citizen” subreddit on Reddit, and a moderator provided an explanation regarding the circumstances behind this action.

According to the explanation, CIG had informally notified the subreddit via DMCA to remove the post. While clarifying that the subreddit is not bound by CIG’s Terms of Service, the moderators stated that they removed the post because Reddit’s Terms of Service allow copyright holders to request the removal of infringing content.

This marks the second time CIG has contacted the subreddit directly; the first instance reportedly concerned an obvious copyright infringement related to the release of the in-game spaceship “890J.”

Regarding this recent series of events, Reddit users have shared opinions from a copyright perspective on the existence of emulation servers for other MMOs and the reverse engineering involved in their development.

On the other hand, some have pointed out that the original Kickstarter pitch included the phrase “moddable multiplayer where users act as hosts,” and that CIG itself had previously provided engineering manuals to mod developers.
