Dazed Games announced that the player count for its physics-based fishing simulator *How to Fish* has surpassed 10 million, and revealed that it is working on a major content update and a console version.

A chaotic, anything-goes fishing sim where you “finish off” your catch with a gun

This game is a chaotic first-person shooter (FPS) and fishing simulator that supports online co-op play for up to eight players.

Players who wash ashore on an island must catch, “finish off,” and sell fish to earn money to buy tools and weapons so they can return home. The methods for “finishing off” fish range from beating them to shooting them—a rather violent affair. In addition to defeating bosses to reach new islands, the game also features ways to earn money through trick shots and gambling.

1 Million Copies in 2 Days, 10 Million Players in Less Than 2 Months

On October 12, the developer reported via Steam News that the game had surpassed 10 million players in less than two months. They described the game as a “chill little fishing game” with a touch of humor while expressing their gratitude to the players.

The game launched for PC on August 20. Immediately after release, it surpassed 20,000 concurrent users, and sales exceeded 1 million copies in just two days.

The momentum continued, and according to SteamDB, the peak concurrent user count reached 373,971 on August 26. At the time of writing, the game has approximately 72,000 Steam user reviews and is rated “Overwhelmingly Positive,” with over 95% of users recommending it.

According to this announcement, the development team plans to spend the next few months working on a larger-scale content update, console ports, and bug fixes. Supported console platforms and release dates have not been disclosed.

The game’s first content update, “Mini-Island Update 1.1.0,” which added new weapons, mini-islands, and mini-bosses, was released in September. It appears this upcoming update will be on a much larger scale compared to that.

Game*Spark has also published an interview with developer Carl-Vilhelm, in which he discusses the development process and the game’s outlook as of September, so be sure to check that out as well.

"How to Fish" is now available for PC (Steam). It costs 880 yen and supports Japanese.
