2nd Place—What the International Version of “Heavy Armor Soldier Valken” Reclaimed After Decades

We’ve published “Ollie’s Robot Game Column” by Ollie Bader, known in Japan as “the foreigner who knows way too much about robot games and anime.”
One of the mecha games that enjoyed an unexpected hit overseas in the ’90s was *Heavy Armor Soldier Valken*.At the time, Konami released this title overseas under the name *Cybernator*, but all of the character portraits created by Satoshi Urushihara were removed, much of the story was mistranslated, and the scene toward the end where the enemy nation’s president commits suicide was also cut.Even so, *Cybernator* was beloved overseas and appears to have influenced *Metal Warriors* and even the *Titanfall* series.

According to him, the majority of Japanese games—and a significant number of anime series—have not been accurately translated overseas. In the past, it was common practice to adapt works to fit the culture of each country, and there were even cases where some translators altered the content and claimed credit for it as their own original work. He states that this remains a major issue in the gaming industry even today.

To rectify one such injustice, he served as creative director on *Heavy Armor Valken: DECLASSIFIED*. Released for the Nintendo Switch on March 30, 2023, this title is based on the Japanese Super Famicom version, with the entire game retranslated into English and the final scene—which had been removed from the international version—restored. In collaboration with M2, a company with a proven track record in retro game remasters, the project included an English translation of the original 80-page Japanese guidebook, an interview with mecha designer Satoru Nakai, and new artwork by Satoshi Urushihara.
Nakai stated that all the effort was worth it because players can now experience *Valken* exactly as the Japanese developers originally intended.
No. 1—The Future Lost by “Titanfall,” a Masterpiece Sacrificed to the Free-to-Play Model

“Ollie’s Robot Game Column” also ranked in the top spot. This time, he discusses Respawn Entertainment’s *Titanfall*.
While many people focus on the pilot’s action sequences and parkour elements in this game, the author explains that for international gamers, the biggest draw is the mechs known as “Titans.” Released in 2014, the first installment combined infantry combat with mech battles, offering a gameplay experience unlike any other game at the time and garnering a huge response overseas.
*Titanfall 2*, released in 2016, featured a substantial single-player campaign in which players fought alongside their partner Titan, “BT-7274.” He raved that it might be the most meticulously crafted and innovative game he’s played since the original *Half-Life* series. However, the game was released at a time when it was in direct competition with both *Battlefield 1* and *Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare*. He offers a slightly sarcastic take on the situation, suggesting that Electronic Arts may have intentionally let the game fade into the background because they were seeking a new free-to-play live-service shooter.Nevertheless, it sold millions of copies and received high praise from critics.

Subsequently, the focus shifted to *Apex Legends*, but mechs were completely eliminated from that title. While *Apex Legends* has attracted approximately 170 million players, *War Robots* had already surpassed 300 million by 2025, and he points out that the exclusion of mechs could have been detrimental to the business model. He reportedly feels that the decision not to invest in a sequel to *Titanfall* was detrimental in the long run for both *Apex Legends* and Electronic Arts.

The latter half of the article features comments from his friend, Kevin Anderson, an artist who worked on the series’ development. Anderson is the person who handled the concept and modeling for the “BT-7274.” For more details, please refer to the original article.
