Publisher Toplitz Productions and developer SpaceRocket Games have launched the survival sandbox game *Permafrost* on Steam Early Access.
A Post-Apocalyptic, Freezing-Cold Survival Game Where You Live with Dogs
Set in an icy world trapped in an endless winter after a series of disasters caused the moon to shatter, this game takes place in a frozen wasteland.In this harsh, post-apocalyptic world, players must hunt, craft, and find ways to survive the terrifying cold. The game eschews constant gunfire and fantasy elements, instead creating a tense, realistic survival experience built on “silence” and “scarcity.”
The game supports not only solo play but also online multiplayer for up to four players. Additionally, by finding and rescuing dogs within the ruins, they become reliable companions who assist in various ways—such as scouting the map, warning of danger, and carrying your gear.
The initial build on Steam Early Access already includes the game’s core features, such as diverse biomes, items, building and crafting recipes, and side quests. The Early Access period is planned to last at least 12 months, and the developers intend to expand content—including biomes, quests, NPCs, and equipment—and optimize the game moving forward.Additionally, the roadmap for updates planned during Early Access has been released.
Release Delayed by a Few Hours to Incorporate Feedback
"Permafrost" launched on Steam Early Access on October 9, 2026, as scheduled, but the release was delayed by a few hours.This was done to incorporate feedback and crash reports gathered during the second playtest, which ran until October 6, 2026 (local time), and the details have been officially released.
The pre-launch update included changes such as “movement key remapping”—one of the most frequently requested features—as well as “performance improvements,” “co-op improvements,” and “localization fixes.”
*Permafrost* is currently available on Steam Early Access.A release commemorative sale is also underway through October 24, 2026, offering the main game at a 20% discount for 2,239 yen. Additionally, DLC such as the official game guidebook, cookbook, and novel are available. The Steam store page indicates that these DLC items also support Japanese.
