Amid Struggles with PS VR2, Is This a Sign of Plans to Scale Back the XR Business?

According to a report by ZDNet Korea based on documents published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Sony plans to transfer a total of 419 XR patents—including those related to virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR),mixed reality (MR), and head-mounted displays (HMDs). Of these, the transfer of rights for 43 U.S. patents was completed between June and September 2026, and the transfer is expected to continue (as per the relevant documents posted on the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office website).

ZDNet Korea analyzed this patent transfer, stating, “Sony is seeking to scale back its XR hardware business.”

Additionally, the PlayStation-focused news site “Push Square” pointed out that “while the original PS VR was a moderate hit for the PS4, its successor, the PS VR2, has struggled to establish a firm foothold.” The site suggests that Sony no longer appears to be approaching its XR business from a long-term perspective.

Meanwhile, Meta has announced new VR glasses, scheduled for release in the spring of 2027, and continues to focus on this field.
