Independent game developer Hige-Shou has released an unofficial front-end for various roguelike games, titled “Hen’yu Ban’do: Voxel HD2D,” on his website.
A text-based world in HD-2D style!? An unofficial front-end that gives the game a voxel 3D look

This is an unofficial front-end that transforms the screen display of the classic roguelike “Hen’yu Ban’do” into a so-called “HD-2D” style, combining 3D graphics with pixel art. This front-end completely revamps the visual appearance of the roguelike world, which was originally text-based only.

Even the “Frontier Town”—a location that *Hen’yu Ban’do* players are likely familiar with right from the start—is depicted as a surprisingly expansive town.

The classic early-game leveling quest, “The Silent Witness,” has also been fully rendered in 3D. The fact that enemies are easy to spot on the minimap may be one of the advantages of this frontend.

I also came across “Poppo the Pigeon,” one of the earliest unique enemies, but since it wasn’t causing any trouble, I left it alone.

You can also play using an FPS-style control scheme with WASD for movement and the mouse for camera control. This might open up a whole new world in its own right.

However, as of October 5, 2026, there are some noticeable instability issues, such as Magic Users having trouble learning spells from their grimoires or the game freezing when trying to buy items from shops.

Note that while this game is billed as a voxelized version of *Hen-Gu-Ban-Do*, you can also play variants like *Gensou Ban-Do* and *Tan-Gu Ban-Do*, as well as *Rogue* (in its Japanese-localized version). Of course, you can switch to FPS view in these titles as well.
*Hen-Gu-Ban-Do Voxel HD2D* is currently available for download on Hige-Shou’s website. It is compatible with PC (Windows/Linux) and Android.
