The Steam version of *The Outlast Trials*, a cooperative survival horror game developed by Red Barrels, recorded a record-high peak concurrent player count of 94,507.

This was driven by a 90% off sale and the new “Chemical Leak” event, in which the area is filled with toxic gas.

Set during the Cold War, this first-person cooperative horror game follows players who have been thrown into mind-control and psychological manipulation experiments conducted by the shadowy Markov Corporation. Players—up to four at a time—must work together to face trials steeped in madness.

Player numbers surged following the 90% off sale that began on October 1. The figure has grown to approximately 2.6 times the previous peak of about 37,000 players recorded in May 2023, shortly after the game’s Early Access launch, marking an unprecedented surge in popularity more than three years after its release.

Behind this sharp increase in player numbers lies not only the unprecedented 90% off sale but also the release of a major update featuring the new event “Chemical Leak.”

The limited-time “Chemical Leak” event is an in-game event running until 10:00 a.m. (ET) on October 6.Special rules apply in which toxic gas released by Markov Corporation fills the challenge areas, requiring players to locate valves scattered throughout each area to shut off the gas while fighting for survival.

A limited-time “Chemical Leak” catalog is also available during the event period, allowing players to unlock exclusive rewards by spending event tokens earned through the trials. Please note that any unused event tokens will be lost when the event ends, so it is recommended that you use them before the event concludes.

New MK Challenges and Adjustments Focused on Fairness

This update goes beyond the event, adding two new MK Challenges: “CHANGE THE PROGRAM” and “FUND THE CAMPAIGN.”

Furthermore, balance adjustments and stability improvements have been made to the “Invasion” and “Escalation” modes, along with quality-of-life (QoL) enhancements.Regarding mod support, it has been discontinued to prevent granting an unfair advantage to certain players and to maintain fairness in gameplay; key features such as FOV (field of view) and camera shake have been integrated into the game’s standard settings menu.

As noted in Game*Spark’s play report, this title masterfully blends the series’ signature sense of horror with the cooperative elements unique to multiplayer. If you’ve been curious about it, why not give it a try while the excitement is at its peak?
