On September 30, 2026, Microsoft launched a service for all Xbox users that provides a digital license for a game if the user owns the physical disc version of that game.

Simply inserting a disc for an Xbox Series X or Xbox One game and playing it will grant you a digital license. However, are some games excluded?

This feature had been available to select Xbox Insider members since August 31. Owners of disc-based games for the Xbox Series X and Xbox One can obtain a digital license for that game by inserting the disc into their console and playing it (or by temporarily disabling the disc’s auto-play function and manually requesting the digital license).

Once you’ve obtained the digital license, you can play that game disc-free from then on, and you can also play licensed games on the Xbox Series S, which doesn’t have a disc drive. If the title is part of the Xbox Play Anywhere program, you’ll also be able to play it on a PC.

Please note that discs for the Xbox 360 and the original Xbox are not covered by this service.

On the international forumReddit, it appears that users overseas are already taking advantage of this service. However, there have also been reports that certain games—such as those from Bandai Namco Entertainment and Square Enix, as well as the *Forza Horizon* series—do not support this feature.

Since the FAQ page for this feature includes the following statement, it appears that some games do not support the granting of digital licenses due to the publishers’ policies.

If the message “Disc license unavailable” appears, it means the inserted game does not participate in the disc-to-digital licensing program, so a digital license cannot be granted for that game.

In any case, this feature is certainly good news for Xbox users. Additionally, the number of supported titles may increase with future updates.
