On September 29, Discord announced that it would begin an early-stage experiment with "Game Mode," a feature designed to reduce the app's CPU and GPU usage while gaming.
To allocate more resources to the game
"Game Mode" is a new feature currently in development that reduces Discord’s CPU and GPU usage while a game is running.
According to “Discord Previews,” an unofficial X account that shares Discord-related information, enabling Game Mode detects when a user is playing a game and automatically reduces Discord’s animations and disables visual effects. As a result, this mechanism appears to limit the resources used by Discord.
Discord already has a feature called “Reduced Motion” that minimizes animations and visual effects when hovering over elements. The international media outletTechRadarsuggests that Game Mode appears to be a feature that automatically switches to this setting while gaming.
However, it remains unclear whether there are other features, which specific animations and effects will be restricted, or exactly how much CPU and GPU usage will actually be reduced.
Discord’s official X account has also commented on this feature. They noted that this is an initial experimental effort and that they plan to begin rolling it out gradually starting next week. They also indicated their intention to add more resource-saving features in the future.
