Alinea Analytics, a video game market research firm, has released an analysis of play patterns and sales trends for the "Resident Evil" video game series around the release of the new "Resident Evil" movie.

Will the Movie Boost Player Numbers and Sales?

The new “Resident Evil” movie follows the protagonist, Brian, a delivery driver, as he fights a desperate battle for survival in Raccoon City amid a spreading T-virus outbreak.

The film opened overseas on September 18, ahead of its Japanese release, and topped the U.S. box office charts for the opening weekend. It has also received high praise from critics, with worldwide opening weekend box office receipts reaching $108.3 million—marking the best opening in the history of the “Resident Evil” film series.

Amid this, Alinea Analytics analyzed the impact of the film’s release on the game series and reported that daily active users increased across all “Resident Evil” titles tracked by the company.

For example, *Resident Evil RE:2* saw a roughly 48% increase, rising from approximately 78,000 to approximately 116,000.In addition, *Resident Evil RE:3* saw an increase of about 25%, *Resident Evil RE:4* about 24%, and the latest title, *Resident Evil: Requiem*, also saw an increase of about 20%.

Furthermore, when comparing sales figures for the week following the movie’s release with the two weeks prior, estimates indicate that sales of the PS5 version of *RE:2* nearly doubled, while *RE:4* saw a 77% increase. However, Alinea Analytics attributes the sales increase primarily to a sale that began on September 10—before the movie’s release—while also noting that the movie provided an additional boost.

On the other hand, for the PS5 version of *Requiem*, daily sales reportedly decreased by about 4% on the weekend the movie was released. According to Alinea Analytics’ estimates, *Requiem*’s sales have surpassed $500 million. They predict that it will ultimately exceed *RE:4*’s total of over $600 million.

The movie *Resident Evil* is scheduled to be released in theaters nationwide in Japan on October 9, 2026.
