Survival games have now become a staple across PC, console, and mobile platforms, with many players enjoying survival experiences set in a variety of worlds.
In Game*Spark’s “Craft Survival Guide” series, a writer who loves this genre introduces and explains the appeal of craft survival games, focusing primarily on classic titles. The game featured this time is *Delverium*, which launched on Steam Early Access on September 22, 2026.
An Exploration Survival Game for Up to 8 Players
*Delverium* is developed by Sagestone Games, an indie game studio based in Australia. Scott Lowther serves as the lead developer, and the game’s soundtrack is composed by BAFTA award-winning composer Jeff van Dyck.
The game was announced in 2024, and its Steam store page went live that same year. Development has progressed through playtests and the release of a demo in 2025.The demo updated in February 2026 supported “split-screen multiplayer”—one of the game’s key features—allowing for multiplayer sessions with up to eight players, including online play.
The game features a top-down perspective, and players must survive as travelers who have awakened in an unfamiliar world. You can explore a procedurally generated world, build a base to welcome NPCs, battle powerful enemies in dungeons, or simply relax and tend to your crops—all at your own pace.
Even during the Steam Early Access phase, players could experience the full scope of the game, including exploring multi-tiered dungeons and battling bosses. The Early Access period is expected to last up to two years, and the developers plan to expand the content—such as enemies, biomes, and items—and add various features, including NPC quests and the ability to ride animals.
Incidentally, interest from Japanese users surged following a feature article on Game*Spark, which led to the decision to add Japanese language support. As someone who has written a play report on this game in the past, I can’t hide my excitement that it has finally been released in Early Access!
First, let’s build a base
When you start the game, you first create your character and world. In this game, character and world data are separate; for your character, you can customize their appearance and set death penalties (money, items, permadeath, or none). For the world, you can set its size, difficulty level, and enable “Horde Mode,” which makes the game even more challenging.
The game begins with the protagonist being dropped into an empty plain. Nearby is “Floyd the Gatherer,” who serves as your guide. Talk to him, and he’ll teach you how to survive in this world and how to build a house for your character and NPCs to live in.

Your inventory contains basic tools like a wooden axe and a pickaxe, so start by gathering resources from your surroundings. This is a classic crafting-survival game: while specific tools are required—such as an axe for wood or a pickaxe for stone—grass and other ground cover can be harvested with any tool or weapon.
To build a house, you’ll need “walls, floors, a bed, and a light source”; once these conditions are met, you can assign an NPC to live there. You’ll be able to buy items from NPCs who have a home, which will be a huge help for your adventures and crafting. Also, if you find new NPCs, you’ll gain logs and hints about this world.

Furthermore, there is always a fast-travel point and a cave entrance located near the starting point. Once you’ve gathered the basic weapons and tools, head out to explore the caves.

Get ready and take on powerful enemies!
“Delverium” aims to blend the sandbox-style fun of *Terraria* with the top-down perspective and farming mechanics of *Stardew Valley*. In the game, your goal is to gather clues about this world while adventuring and defeat the bosses that lie in wait.
This world is divided into multiple biomes and layers, each featuring different materials and enemies. Since the game features a high density of enemies—especially in dungeons—you’ll be easily defeated if you rush into exploration. It’s important to start by expanding your exploration area from the central hub and crafting the equipment you can currently obtain.

Since this game’s combat lacks elements like dodging or blocking, it’s crucial to employ tactics such as fortifying your defense with gear, launching preemptive strikes with bows or magic, and utilizing the terrain. Additionally, treasure chests scattered throughout the world contain “tokens” that increase your health and mana, so boosting your base stats will improve your chances of survival.
While the game features potions that restore mana or increase movement speed, there are no potions to restore HP; instead, natural recovery and “cooking” serve as your means of healing. Cooking provides both instant healing and boosts natural recovery efficiency, with higher-quality dishes offering greater benefits. Therefore, farming and raising livestock at your base become essential tasks for your adventures.

Since you cannot place building materials in dungeons in this game, there are very few safe places other than the surface. Furthermore, even if you escape using stairs, nearby enemies will chase you across floor levels, so you must never let your guard down. Never push yourself too hard—being well-prepared is the key to survival in this world.

The real adventure begins once you’ve overcome the “wall”
In *Delverium*, you’ll adventure through a procedurally generated world. It appears the game’s generation algorithm follows certain rules: the surface is divided into several islands separated by rivers and oceans. Note that early in the game, you have no way to cross these bodies of water.
Therefore, the basic approach to your adventure is to explore caves while searching for exits to other areas on the surface. There are also fast-travel steles scattered throughout the world, so discovering them will make your future adventures much easier. Of course, it’s also important to search for local materials and treasure chests to upgrade your equipment and tools.

At first, you might feel that the scope of your adventure is a bit limited, but by crafting a specific ore-based tool during your journey, you’ll be able to destroy the “walls” that previously blocked your progress in dungeons. From this point on, the world expands so much that you could say this is where *Delverium* really begins—with new worlds, NPCs, and boss battles awaiting you.
The core of this game is finding answers with minimal clues; you’ll spend your time relentlessly digging holes in the world, venturing underground, and carving out new paths. Of course, once you’re able to craft higher-tier tools, your speed for destroying walls and trees will increase. The game delivers that satisfying “feeling of digging” characteristic of mining survival games, making it easy to experience the joy of expanding the world.

Additionally, powerful enemies and bosses throughout the world drop rare loot. Since all rare gear is extremely powerful, players who enjoy combat will find themselves fighting hordes of enemies—but it’s definitely worth aiming for these drops during your adventures.

Of course, you can also take it easy and build your base
This game isn’t just about adventure—you can also enjoy a leisurely life at your base. Generally, enemy monsters won’t interfere with NPCs, and with the exception of a few types, they won’t attack you as long as you stay inside your house.
It’s important to create large-scale fields to grow the food essential for your adventures, go fishing, and raise chickens and sheep. Since exploration is necessary to discover new crops and animals, the game seamlessly blends base management with adventure elements. Livestock aren’t just a source of produce—their meat is also a vital ingredient—so be sure to secure plenty of space for breeding.

“Delverium” also excels in crafting, featuring user-friendly systems such as “materials placed in nearby chests can be used for crafting,” “you can store all items of the same type into a chest at once from the inventory screen,”“You can craft items by skipping secondary materials if you have the primary materials,” and “You can craft if a production facility is nearby”—all of which make for a user-friendly system.
As a result, if you group production facilities and chests together to some extent at your base, you can handle storage and crafting all at once. While there are a vast number of items that serve as materials, obtaining “Inventory Tokens” in-game increases your inventory capacity, so you’ll almost never run out of space and be unable to bring items back.

While the later stages of adventure and combat are a bit challenging, this is fundamentally a game where you can explore and craft at your own pace. It’s also a nice touch that time-intensive activities, such as farming, result in high-quality dishes that support your adventures—making it easy to feel a real sense of accomplishment from your gameplay!

“Delverium,” which supports Japanese, is an easy-to-play crafting survival game with a classic style. There’s a real sense of satisfaction in steadily exploring and expanding your world, and as you progress, surprising new worlds await you.
When it comes to combat, it’s hard to get away with relying on tricks alone, so thorough preparation is essential. The rule that “you can’t place building materials inside dungeons” adds to the game’s tension, so you’ll need to carefully balance gathering resources with knowing when to retreat as you decide how far to venture.

In the current build, the NPC-related content feels a bit lacking, but the developers have already announced that more elements will be added in future updates. Since this game has grown alongside its community through numerous playtests and demo releases leading up to its Early Access launch, it’s a title we’re looking forward to seeing improve even further!
