On August 6, 2026, *The Tale of Digital Drifting* was released for PC (Steam). This game is a laid-back online simulation where players drift endlessly through a digital ocean, gradually forming connections with others.

In this game, players build their own unique seas and islands within a 100x100 electronic ocean shared by all users—whether they choose to drift leisurely with the waves or simply leave the game running in the background.

With its vague gameplay lacking clear goals or objectives and an unfriendly system that offers no explanations, the game’s appearance and difficulty level seem to go against the grain of modern trends. However, it’s a game that grows on you the more you play—combining survival elements like item collection and crafting with the ability to enjoy a laid-back ocean adventure at your own pace.

In this article, we’ll share a playthrough report on *A Tale of Digital Drifting*.

◆ Drift leisurely through the digital ocean! Explore your very own area

Let’s dive right into the main game. When you launch the title screen, you can enter your name. For now, I went with “SPAKUN,” the idol of our very own GameSpa. That’s off to a good start.

Next, I set the screen size and game volume. The game’s pixel art visuals are idyllic and lovely, but the sound design—including item pickup sounds and click effects—was also incredibly addictive.

Finally, you’ll choose your character’s gender and customize the appearance of your “boat (raft),” which serves as your avatar. You can adjust the layout of the hull, mast, and cargo.

A Familiar Face

By the way, you can also edit your profile. Believe it or not, you can even upload your own profile picture and write a self-introduction.

I set my profile picture to a somewhat familiar, annoying-looking face. Please don’t punch me if you see it.

You start in a place that’s incredibly unsettling—nothing but the vast open ocean stretching out in every direction, with absolutely nothing else in sight. Seeing that shabby raft floating all alone only heightens the sense of loneliness.

What on earth am I supposed to do here? Just as I’m feeling a bit bewildered by this landscape with no clear purpose…

Various kinds of flotsam drift in from all around, and you can collect them. For example, “oil drums” and “oil” serve as fuel for your boat, while “rusty metal sheets” and “styrofoam” become materials for crafting tools.

Collecting this kind of washed-up trash and junk is one of the game’s main attractions. Personally, I really like the sound effect that plays when you pick up an item.

Anyway, let’s start exploring this area for now. If you select “Move” from the menu, buttons for “North, South, East, and West” will appear; click the direction you want to go to move there.

First, let’s head north. Since your progress is displayed on a coordinate grid, it’s a bit hard to intuitively tell where you are. Still, as you drift along…

...you’ll reach a new area called “Corone” and discover an island. I’ll take a break here for now.

This game has various status values—like fuel, hunger, and HP—that gradually decrease over time. So, if you don’t keep a close eye on your condition by picking up driftwood to eat or crafting food like grilled small fish, you’ll die in the blink of an eye. It might seem laid-back, but it’s actually quite unforgiving.

You can also gather materials to craft survival tools like spears, portable stoves, and nets.

Furthermore, there are a wide variety of “quests” you can undertake using the tools you’ve crafted, such as free diving and fishing; completing them earns you money and experience points.

When you level up based on that experience, you’ll receive BP (BP), which you can use in the skill tree to increase your “Stamina” or enhance your abilities—there’s a growth system built into the game.

And believe it or not, there are even enemies in the ocean that will engage you in combat! You can choose between melee and ranged attacks, and even select the specific type of attack. The enemy I just encountered was a “Gray Mosquito Swarm,” which I defeated with a sailor’s powerful punch.

As you can see, the “Drifting → Discovery → Development” cycle forms the foundation of this game, allowing you to drift across the ocean at your own pace while shaping your very own world.

As mentioned above, there’s a wealth of things to do, so you’ll never get bored—I enjoyed the laid-back yet exciting gameplay.

What I personally found interesting were the game’s unique online elements. While all players share the same virtual ocean, the atmosphere is quite different from typical online games where large groups of players gather in one place to make a racket.

At its core, the game is a solitary experience—you drift alone across the vast ocean. However, as you continue your voyage, you may come across “traces of others who’ve been here,” such as areas claimed by other players or islands they’ve built. You don’t have to exchange direct conversations, nor do you have to team up to defeat giant bosses.

If you like, you can even write a message in a bottle for other players you’ve never met. It’s quite romantic, isn’t it?

It’s precisely this asynchronous, laid-back connection that I found so enjoyable as a “chill-out” online player.

"A Tale of Digital Drifting" is currently available on Steam for 600 yen.
