The CropFactor Team has released a teaser video for "Project Capture," a mod that completely revamps the gameplay of *Portal 2*.
Inspired by a discarded concept from *Portal 2*
This mod draws inspiration from “F-Stop,” a new camera-based mechanic featured in early *Portal 2* concepts, in which players use the “ASQRA Quantum Camera” instead of the Portal Gun.This camera can capture objects within the world and reposition them in the real world, allowing players to carve out new paths and solve complex, multi-layered puzzles.

Portals Still Exist
The series’ signature portals haven’t disappeared entirely; they exist as part of the environment, much like a force of nature. They are fixed, powerful elements that you must sometimes utilize and sometimes contend with. This concept reaches its peak in the final stages, where the ability to move the portals themselves between specified frames using the camera is unlocked, reportedly enabling an unprecedented level of spatial control.

Going Beyond the Limits of the Vanilla Engine
Furthermore, the game achieves what was previously thought impossible with the vanilla Source engine. Without any engine code modifications or DLL hacking, it reportedly introduces dynamic physics-based shading, true volumetric lighting, cube maps with parallax correction, and a completely original ray-casting system.

"Project Capture," in which players will experience a new story alongside familiar yet transformed characters and unravel the truths hidden within their intertwined fates and the future of Aperture Science, is scheduled for release in 2028.
