"Minecraft Dungeons," a dungeon-crawler-style action RPG set in the world of "Minecraft," is set to release its sequel, "Minecraft Dungeons II," on September 29, 2026.
A gameplay presentation for the media, led by the development team in conjunction with gamescom 2026, was held, showcasing the setting for this new adventure and game systems that have evolved from the previous title.
While retaining the accessibility that was so well-received in the first game, the presentation introduced various new features, including deeper equipment customization, more open-ended exploration, and cooperative play that’s now easier to enjoy.
In this article, we’ll cover the game’s key features revealed during the presentation.
Maintaining the accessibility of the previous game while adding even more depth as an action RPG!
According to the development team, they placed a high priority on feedback from players of the previous title during the development of this game. They explained that they worked to improve upon the game while retaining its strengths, aiming to create a true sequel—not merely additional content.
The three main pillars of development are “balancing accessibility and depth,” “enhancing co-op play,” and “expanding exploration elements.”
The previous game was popular because it was easier to jump into than standard *Minecraft* and could be enjoyed immediately upon picking up a controller. However, there were also calls for greater depth as an action RPG.

Therefore, in this title, the developers have significantly expanded the equipment system while maintaining the game’s traditional accessibility. In addition to increasing the number of armor slots, they’ve added a new equipment category called “Talismans,” which provide new passive effects.
Furthermore, the weapon enhancement and enchantment systems have evolved. At the blacksmith’s shop in your base, you can enhance your favorite weapons. Even as you progress through the game and your character levels up, you’ll be able to continue using your favorite weapons for a long time by enhancing them.
As for enchantments, while the previous game required players to choose from pre-set options for weapons, this installment allows you to create gear tailored to your preferences using enchantment books that can be obtained throughout the world. During the presentation, a build was demonstrated that combined an effect that fires an arrow in sync with a dodge maneuver with an effect that causes the arrow to ricochet when it hits an enemy.
Since enchantments can be changed later and the currency used for upgrades can be recovered, players will likely be able to experiment with various combinations. Additionally, a screen is provided where players can examine equipment effects and synergies in detail, catering to those who want to fine-tune their gear setups. On the other hand, the game is designed so that players can still enjoy it without having to pay attention to these detailed elements.
“Jumping”—a feature absent from the previous game—has finally arrived! Explore the vast world freely
A major change in this title is the setting for your adventures. In the previous game, the progression followed a stage-selection format: players would open the map from their base camp, select a dungeon, clear it, and then return to the camp.
In contrast, in this title, each dungeon is set within a single vast world, allowing players to explore by walking around various locations. The development team describes this world not as a typical open world, but as an “Interconnected World.”

While you can progress through the adventure by following the main quest, you can also take detours along the way to search for hidden dungeons and side quests. Random enemy encounters and mini-boss battles are scattered throughout the world, allowing you to play however you like—whether that’s adventuring to find the gear you want or strengthening your character before returning to the main story.
Furthermore, “jumping”—a feature absent from the previous game—has finally been implemented! Not only does jumping allow you to explore by taking advantage of elevation changes in the field, but the addition of jump attacks also brings a new element to combat. The presentation showcased areas with significant elevation changes, as well as shortcuts that open up by activating certain mechanisms.
New paths may even open up in areas you’ve already explored, suggesting that the joy of roaming the world has been prioritized even more than in the previous game. Additionally, you can use fast travel by discovering the travel stations scattered throughout the world. A guide indicating quest destinations and a minimap are also provided, ensuring you can continue your adventure without getting lost, even in this vast world.
Dungeon exploration and gear collection have been enhanced! New features for your adventure hub
This presentation also introduced the town that serves as the hub for your adventures. The town features multiple merchants where you can purchase items, upgrade equipment, and apply enchantments. A new leveling system has been introduced for merchants; by using a dedicated currency to raise their levels, you’ll be able to purchase rarer items.
Additionally, in the procedurally generated dungeons found throughout the world, you can obtain items such as enchantment books that help with equipment customization. Since the enemies that appear in various regions also change randomly, you may encounter different battles even when revisiting the same area.

Furthermore, this demo showcased items that are more powerful than standard equipment and possess special abilities. Collecting this gear allows you to further develop your character’s build.
In terms of controls, a compact inventory has been implemented that allows you to change equipment without taking up the entire screen. Even during co-op play, you can check your equipment without interrupting other players’ adventures.
Easier to Play with Family and Friends! Co-op Play Combining Local and Online Modes
Various improvements have also been made to the co-op gameplay, which was highly popular in the previous title.
According to the development team, many players in the previous title played with their children, and being able to enjoy the game together in the same room was one of its major appeals. This title maintains the fun of such local co-op play while also supporting a combination with online play.
For example, it’s possible for two players in the same room to team up online with two others in different locations to adventure together. Cross-platform co-op is also supported, allowing you to play with friends using different consoles. Furthermore, a system has been introduced that ensures players with significantly different character levels can still adventure together with appropriate difficulty and rewards.
This makes it easier for players who have just started the game to adventure together with those who have already been playing for a long time. Incidentally, the demo also showcased the familiar TNT attacks from the previous game. Since TNT can damage allies as well, unexpected mishaps are sure to occur during co-op play.

The endgame takes a different form than the previous title! Stay tuned for future announcements
Toward the end of the presentation, questions were raised about post-game content. In the previous game, players could replay the adventure on a higher difficulty level after completing it, but this title reportedly features a different kind of endgame.
However, to avoid spoilers, specific details were not revealed during this presentation. It was also explained that the total playtime will vary significantly depending on whether players focus primarily on the main quest or how extensively they explore side quests and other content.
*Minecraft Dungeons II* builds on the accessible action of its predecessor while greatly expanding the freedom of equipment customization and exploration. Whether you’re taking detours through the vast world or embarking on adventures with friends to collect gear, it looks like you’ll be able to enjoy the game in ways that are a little different from the first installment.

*Minecraft Dungeons II* is scheduled for release on September 29, 2026, for PC (Steam/Microsoft Store),PS5,XBOX Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. It is also compatible with Game Pass.
