Refractive Entertainment has released footage of a scene featuring an NPC speaking in the action RPG *Luminary*. The NPC—whose voice was provided by the developer’s wife—had been the subject of criticism based on the mistaken belief that the voice was generated by AI.
The NPC Targeted by an “AI Witch Hunt”

In this title, currently in Early Access, an update released on August 25 introduced a guardian NPC to the initial temple. It was also revealed that the voice actress for this NPC is the developer’s wife.
On September 12, the developer reported on the game’s official X account that there had been a review stating “I do not recommend this game” because “the NPC’s voice was generated by AI.” On overseas forums, some users expressed concern about the “AI witch hunt”—a phenomenon where people baselessly accuse games they dislike of using generative AI.
What Does Her Voice Sound Like?
Today, September 17, the same X account looked back on how the NPC’s voice mentioned above had become a hot topic, posting that people who haven’t played the game were “curious about what her voice sounds like.” The attached video shows a scene where that NPC is actually speaking, and you can hear that the voice belongs to the developer’s wife, who is a voice actress.
The post explains that chorus and reverb effects were used and concludes with the question, “Does her voice sound like AI to you?”
The comments section features many responses stating that the voice doesn’t sound like it was generated by AI—such as “It sounds robotic, but I don’t think it’s AI” and “It’s completely different”—as well as advice on how to use the effects.
*Luminary* is currently available in Early Access for Windows (Steam).
