Puzzles and graphics evolve true to form! Experience “Professor Layton and the New World of Steam.” A new era dawns [TGS2026]

The “TOKYO GAME SHOW 2026” is being held at Makuhari Messe from September 17 to 21, 2026.

This event brings together a wide variety of games, ranging from highly anticipated new releases to notable titles yet to be seen. In this article, we’ll introduce the latest entry in the “Professor Layton” series, *Professor Layton and the New World of Steam*, which is on display at the Level-5 booth, along with a hands-on report from the event.

A New Era for Layton, Brought to Life by Stunning Art and Animation

The art in this title builds upon the foundation established in previous *Professor Layton* series games and has evolved even further.

The 3D character models now have a texture closer to that of anime, while the cityscapes and overall map graphics have become more detailed and beautiful—truly representing a “legitimate evolution” of the series, which has previously been released on handheld consoles.

I’d especially like to highlight the character animations. In particular, the “familiar” three-pose sequence that appears when a character solves a puzzle—combined with their rich facial expressions—is a real joy to watch. Luke is so cute.

The cutscenes interspersed throughout the game are also exceptionally well-done.

Until now, the Layton series has progressed through original animated cutscenes and dialogue sequences using character sprites, but starting with this title, those have been replaced with 3D cutscenes. I’m not sure if hand-drawn animation will disappear entirely, but considering that the 3D models themselves have a distinct cel-shaded look, it didn’t bother me much.

As for the puzzles—which are particularly important in the Layton series—the ones presented in this game were generally satisfying.

With the passing of Professor Teru Tago, known for his “brain teasers,” there had been a variety of opinions circulating about the difficulty and quality of the puzzles in this series, but I feel that the puzzles created by QuizKnock turned out to be quite interesting.

I played a total of three puzzles this time, and the selection was quite varied—ranging from those that purely test observational skills to the “witty, out-of-the-box” problems that Professor Tago was known for—and I could really feel the respect for his legacy. I think this is the best possible choice in terms of both name recognition and quality.

By the way, the Level-5 booth wasn’t just about playing the demo—it was quite spectacular, featuring a giant steamship—symbolic of the game—flying overhead, as well as a photo spot where you could take pictures standing next to Layton and Luke!
