Asymmetrical Hidden-Identity Horror Game “Mimic” Launches in Early Access; Spot the Human-Mimicking Alien, Escape the Spaceship

A story in which, after an alien capable of mimicking humans (a "Mimic") is detected, it is determined that the crew's survival is impossible, and they attempt to escape from a spaceship on a suicide mission toward the sun.

PC Windows
"Mimic," a new asymmetrical multiplayer horror game centered on identity concealment, has launched in Early Access. Identify the alien capable of mimicking humans and escape the spaceship.

Independent developer Ryan Laley Games has launched Early Access for "Mimic," an action-adventure game featuring local and online multiplayer.

Early Access Launch

Following the game’s announcement in May 2024 and the launch of its Epic Games Store and Steam store pages, Early Access has now begun for the title, which has undergone intermittent playtesting over the past few months.

During the Early Access period, the developers plan to add a wealth of new content and features, including three new maps and a single-player mode. They also intend to provide ongoing updates and improvements.

“Mimic” is currently in Early Access for PC (Steam). A release on the Epic Games Store is also planned. Furthermore, a release on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S is scheduled for 2027.

The World Setting and Gameplay Rules of *Mimic*

This game is a hidden-identity title, similar to *Among Us*, and follows the rules outlined below.

Number of Players

  • Asymmetric multiplayer for 5 players in official matches and up to 10 players in private matches.

Setting

  • The setting is the spaceship “Icarus,” which is destined to self-destruct by crashing into the sun after it has been determined that rescuing the crew is impossible due to the presence of the mimetic alien known as the “Mimic.” Additionally, a maintenance android NPC, programmed to kill everyone on board, roams the ship.

Three Player Roles

Each player assumes one of the following three roles:

  • Crew: Human crew members who aim to repair the ship’s systems—which are being destroyed by solar flares—and escape via the ejection pods. They can identify the Mimic, leave it behind, or use the murderous android NPC to eliminate it. Using an ejection pod while the Mimic is still on board results in a loss.

  • Agent: A corporate operative who looks just like a Crew member and aims to eliminate the Crew while keeping the Mimic alive and returning with it. They must also complete their own specific missions.

  • Mimic: A murderous alien capable of mimicking the crew. Victory is achieved by either wiping out the entire crew—either by taking them out directly or by sending murderous android NPCs to do so—or by boarding the escape pod as a member of the crew without their true identity being revealed. Escaping with the Agent is also permitted.

Common Mechanics

  • Killer Android NPCs—Targets are selected by vote. Even if not voted for, they constantly roam the ship. They pose a threat not only to humans but also to the Mimic.

  • Use the in-game close-range chat to deduce clues and guide other players.

  • Even after dying, players can still influence the match as ghost-like entities.

  • While official matches are fixed to specific rules, private matches allow for various customizations, such as one-hit kills or making Mimics invisible.

  • Twitch integration—viewers can give instructions to the Murderous Android NPC.
