On October 26, Microsoft announced the introduction of a voluntary retirement program covering up to 60,000 employees.
Up to 60,000 employees—approximately one-quarter of the total workforce—are eligible
On its official blog, the company published a message to employees from Amy Coleman, Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer, regarding the voluntary retirement program.
According to the post, this program offers eligible employees who are considering future careers outside the company a new option to leave while receiving financial assistance and career development support. The company explained that this also serves as a new tool for flexibly adjusting its workforce in response to business needs.

The voluntary separation program is a new initiative for the company, and the company stated, “We will continue to support employees so they can learn a great deal from this program and, at the same time, find new career opportunities within Microsoft as needed.” The company stated that eligible employees in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and India will receive an email within a few hours of the announcement containing a link to view the details.
According to the tech media outlet “The Verge,” citing sources familiar with the matter, this voluntary retirement program will cover employees across a wide range of departments, including AI Experience, Copilot, CoreAI, Xbox, Human Resources, and Finance, with up to 60,000 employees eligible (though only some departments, such as Legal and External Affairs, will participate).
On the other hand, certain departments—such as marketing, commercial business, and security—are reportedly excluded from the program. Furthermore, eligibility is reportedly not based on age, length of service, or performance.

On Reddit, a post describing the matter as “a massive voluntary buyout affecting 25% of Microsoft’s entire workforce—shocking news for the tech industry” has garnered significant attention.
While some users have expressed strong concerns—such as “If a major corporation takes such measures, it will set a precedent, and other major tech companies, as well as small and medium-sized businesses, may end up carrying out layoffs on the same scale” and “Will they use AI to cover the work left by the departed employees?”—surprisingly calm comments are also prominent.
“This is said to affect about 25 percent of all employees, but that doesn’t mean 25 percent will be laid off. They’re likely anticipating voluntary resignations of around 10 percent across each department and job category. If the target isn’t met, the next step will be staff reductions,” one comment read.
Alternatively, some users expressed differing views on the matter, with comments such as: “This is the tech industry, right? I’m tired of people getting shocked or making a big fuss every time something like this comes up. Microsoft has over 220,000 employees—it’s completely different from a typical company. This isn’t the first time they’ve had a large-scale workforce reduction, and it probably won’t be the last.”
