The "NVForever" project, which aims to make *Fallout: New Vegas* playable on a custom open-source engine, is currently underway.
The custom engine breaks free from the limitations of the original version and adds unique features, including mod support.

This project aims to develop a custom open-source game engine that allows players to actually play the open-world RPG *Fallout: New Vegas*, developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Bethesda Softworks. Please note that this project does not include the game’s data itself; a legitimately purchased copy of *Fallout: New Vegas* is required to run the game.
*Fallout: New Vegas* uses the Gamebryo engine, which was perfectly adequate at the time of its release, but now, some 16 years later, it presents various limitations in terms of performance and functionality.
While the emergence of crash-prevention mods, mods that improve various memory management functions, and tools like DXVK has helped create an environment capable of more stable and smoother performance, the reality is that engine-related limitations cannot be fully resolved by mods alone.

According to the developer, GitHub user LootJunkieAzza, this project is a free engine project that carries on the spirit of OpenMW. Its goal is to recreate processes—such as loading game archives and plugins, rendering, physics, scripting, AI, combat, conversation, menus, and audio processing—all of which were handled by the original game engine—using newly written code based on publicly available documentation and an analysis of the original version’s behavior.
In version 0.4.0, released on October 21, 2026, the card game “Caravan,” slot machines, the ability to issue commands to companions, weapon modifications, scope displays, and limb loss effects were added.Implementation of basic features such as loading archives and plugins, physics simulation, combat, and dialogue is also underway; however, this is currently a pre-release version still in development. Please note that the game is not yet at a stage where the entire game can be played without issues.

Another notable feature of this project is its support for the mod management tool “Mod Organizer 2,” which allows players to load compatible existing mods. However, it currently does not support plugins for the scripting extension tool “NVSE,” so there are still limitations regarding compatibility with existing mods.
Rather than using mods to compensate for the weaknesses of an older game engine, this project aims to create an entirely new, proprietary game engine from scratch. “NVForever” is a bold and ambitious project, and we look forward to seeing its future progress.
