Studio Origame Digital, the team behind the unconventional title *Umrangi Generation*—a game set in a world spiraling toward destruction—Their latest release, *Penguin Colony*, is an extremely unique and challenging adventure game in which players witness cosmic horror—from the perspective of a penguin, no less.

The publisher is Fellow Traveller, known for titles such as *1000xRESIST*.Heavily inspired by H.P. Lovecraft’s classic horror stories such as *At the Mountains of Madness* and *The Shadow Out of Time*, the game faithfully reinterprets and expands upon Lovecraft’s universe, set in Antarctica in 1939—just two years after his death.
In the previously released demo, the story concluded as you followed in the footsteps of Nazi scientists—driven by suspicion and spiraling into madness amid the eerie sounds echoing through the base—until you reached a massive ruin that suddenly appeared in the frigid landscape.A massive, imposing structure towering over the snow-white landscape. What exactly awaited players beyond that story, which left such a powerful impression on so many?

In this article, we’ll deliver a play report covering everything from the innovative concept presented in the demo—"the collapse of humanity as seen through the eyes of a penguin"—to the interior of the massive structure and the terrifying truth slumbering deep within, as well as the profound drama of the human side that is newly revealed.
A Frozen Abyss Where Madness and a “Great Presence” Stir
The story is set on the vast Antarctic landscape, where a harsh environment prevails. You select a penguin to control from the flock and make your way through the vast, snow-covered world by utilizing a variety of actions—from waddling and sliding on your belly to climbing walls while managing your stamina, and swimming freely underwater.

Additionally, in this game, you can switch between different penguins within the flock to control.Among the various penguin species—such as Emperor and Adélie penguins—some have abundant stamina while others are excellent swimmers, and hidden throughout the map are tiny passages that only penguin chicks can pass through. In this hellish landscape, the information you uncover changes depending on which penguin you switch to and which route you take.

Along the way, you’ll encounter Nazi scientists who, answering the call of an otherworldly, ancient entity, are heading deep into Antarctica in search of a powerful force capable of bringing about destruction. However, the penguins have no way of understanding what is happening to these scientists. No matter how horrific the situations they encounter, the penguins can only follow behind and observe. This sense of helplessness—the inability to intervene—and overwhelming indifference gradually builds into a crushing weight.

As the penguin slips through the cracks and crevices of the massive structure and steps inside, the game’s atmosphere changes completely. The monstrous beings that had been writhing in the darkness within the ruins spill out onto the frozen ground, blocking the penguin’s path.

And amidst the ruins entangled by these monstrous beings and the darkness, a shocking scene unfolds as a colossal monster—which has finally awakened—lashes out at humanity. Though the scientists resist with guns and weapons, they are, of course, powerless to stop its rampage in the face of this cosmic horror.Amid the intense gunfire and screams, the penguin is forcibly dragged into the vortex of the tragedy, left with no choice but to flee in desperation.

There is no doubt that the very structure of the film—which drives home the despair that “even armed humans are utterly powerless and have no choice but to flee in the face of an overwhelming threat”—is precisely what makes this a cosmic horror masterpiece.
A Profound Ensemble Drama Woven by “Invaders” and “Guardians”
The human story depicted in this work is not limited to scientists. The indigenous guardians known as the “Kaitiaki” play a crucial role as a opposing faction.

In 1939, Nazi scientists answer the call of an ancient entity, seeking a powerful force capable of bringing about destruction. They are portrayed as beings obsessed with propaganda, nationalistic delusions, and the falsification of history—forces that trample upon the tranquility of Antarctica.Meanwhile, guided by a mysterious force, the Kaitiaki—guardians of the indigenous people—also arrived in Antarctica. To fulfill the duty passed down through generations, they attempt to seal away the ancient entity and return it to its centuries-long slumber. From a third-party perspective, we follow the paths of the two opposing factions—“the Nazis” and “Kaitiaki”—as they clash in Antarctica, the penguins’ homeland.

While the scientists’ records—revealed through narration and photographs scattered throughout the area—reveal their selfish ambitions and crumbling spirits, the Kaitia’s mission, passed down across generations, and their desperate resolve emerge from every corner of the story.

The penguins themselves take no side, simply waddling across the scene where the histories of the two factions collide. To the penguin, they are nothing more than “strange creatures that just happen to be there.” This overwhelming neutrality allows us to objectively observe how myths and propaganda are created and how they lead humanity toward destruction, inviting us to deep reflection.
A one-of-a-kind cosmic horror experience where cuteness and eeriness coexist
The greatest uniqueness of *Penguin Colony* lies in its overwhelming atmosphere. At first glance, the sight of penguins sliding down snowy slopes and waddling along together appears cute and heartwarming, like a lighthearted animal comedy. However, once you turn your attention to the background, a landscape unfolds that weaves together otherworldly madness with nature and ruins of a ruthlessly beautiful kind. The rich, deep voice of Renval Brown, who provides the solemn narration, creates a retro, cinematic sense of suspense. The gloomy and serene atmosphere quietly erodes the player’s sanity.

Additionally, checkpoints located throughout each area feature decipherable mysterious symbols and encrypted messages; however, these are not essential to progressing through the game but are included as elements for fans who wish to delve deeper into the game’s world.

It takes about three hours to reach the ending, at which point a simplified map of the entire area and the exploration route taken during this playthrough are displayed.Faced with the sheer vastness of that map and its complex, multi-layered structure, you can’t help but feel that the tragedy you witnessed was merely a tiny fragment—and that a completely different story is woven for each player depending on the penguin they chose and the route they took.

Penguins pass by the scenes of the tragedy without a second thought. The world of the Cthulhu Mythos, experienced through their “indifference” and “helplessness,” delivers a new kind of terror unlike any horror game before it and leaves a lasting impression.A masterpiece adventure that reinterprets the essence of classic cosmic horror with modern techniques, masterfully depicting history, mythology, and “the insignificance of human existence.” Why not peer into the dark abyss through the innocent eyes of a penguin?
*Penguin Colony* is now available for PC (via Steam). A demo is also available.
