Germany-based Keen Games will release Update 1.0 for the survival action RPG *Enshrouded: Kingdom of Mist* on October 15, 2026, transitioning the game from Early Access to its full release.

Set in the lost kingdom of “Embervale,” which has been consumed by a terrifying “fog” that is devouring the world, the game follows players as the last remaining hope, striving to restore the world. While adventuring through scorching wastelands, deep forests, and fog-shrouded areas, players must battle various monsters and search for traces of civilization and forgotten myths.

A major feature of the game is its construction system, powered by a high-performance voxel editor. As you welcome new NPCs to your base during your adventures, new equipment and tools will be unlocked. With a wide variety of weapons, spells, and skills, players can craft their own unique combat styles—another key appeal of the game. It also supports multiplayer for up to 16 players.

In this article, we present a review of *Enshrouded: Kingdom of Mist*, which is finally set to launch in its official version. Gameplay footage and some screenshots were captured using a pre-release build provided by the developer.

Living as Flameborn, the Last Hope

The story of *Enshrouded: Kingdom of Mist* begins with the player awakening from a long slumber. In Embervale, the kingdom has fallen due to the “Shroud”—a mist that arose as a result of people digging deep into the world in search of the elixir.

As a Flameborn—a being created within this dying world—the protagonist is guided by the “Flame,” the only force capable of countering the Mist, and is tasked with reclaiming the world. Starting out alone, the player must build a base, find fellow survivors who are also in slumber, eradicate the source of the dreaded Mist, and confront powerful monsters.

As a game, it is an action RPG with crafting and survival elements; not only do you fight using weapons, but gathering resources with axes and pickaxes to craft and build is also crucial. There is a vast variety of obtainable items, offering the joy of thoroughly exploring the world.

The fog that destroyed the kingdom is present all over the world, and within it lurk terrifying monsters. While valuable items and legends remain hidden within the fog, the time you can spend active in it is limited. Since strengthening your base is key to surviving in the fog, you must prepare meticulously before venturing out.

In Version 1.0, new biomes are unlocked, and even more formidable foes await. Additionally, with new variants of existing monsters now appearing, you can enjoy fresh adventures and battles even in familiar areas.

Enjoy a Variety of Combat Styles

This game features a wide variety of weapons for combat, allowing you to freely enjoy close-range combat with one-handed or two-handed weapons, dual-wielding daggers, or long-range combat using bows and magic. By spending points earned through leveling up to learn skills, you’ll gain access to weapon-specific techniques and the ability to launch surprise attacks on enemies, greatly expanding your combat options.

In this game—which is primarily a solo adventure, excluding multiplayer—combat generally takes the form of one-against-many. While powerful gear allows you to face enemies head-on, combat actions consume stamina, so it’s not uncommon to be surrounded and defeated in the blink of an eye if you let your guard down.

Early in the game, you’ll unlock a double-jump ability and means of movement such as a grappling hook and a glider. At key locations, it’s important to use elevation changes and obstacles to gradually lure enemies out or escape to safety. Especially in the fog, where there’s a time limit on how long you can stay active, never pushing yourself too hard is the key to survival.

A distinctive feature is combat with wands, which require you to charge up spells before using them. Most spells are consumable and also use mana, making them difficult to handle early on, but they become extremely powerful as the protagonist levels up. There are also wands that fire fixed magic projectiles with infinite ammo, which can be used as one-handed weapons alongside a shield.

Weapons can also be upgraded, with the number of times they can be enhanced varying by grade. Since every weapon type has its own unique strengths, being able to choose based on personal preference is a major draw. Weapons are primarily obtained from treasure chests or as drops from bosses, so traveling the world to acquire powerful weapons adds to the fun.

The World Expands Through Destruction

In the voxel-based game *Enshrouded: Kingdom of Mist*, the ability to easily destroy objects is a major feature. With an axe, you can easily break furniture and fences, and with a pickaxe, you can dig into the ground and walls. The pickaxe, in particular, is a handy tool that not only lets you gather ores but also greatly expands the game’s possibilities in every way.

For example, near where the protagonist wakes up lies a ruined town; if you clear away the rubble with a pickaxe, you’ll discover a hidden area containing treasure chests and logs. Similarly, there are many buried treasures scattered throughout the world, and many quests require you to find hidden paths.

You can also climb to high places—albeit somewhat forcefully—by digging your way up cliffs with a pickaxe. Of course, since tools have durability limits and some terrain cannot be destroyed, it’s not a universal solution, but the game offers a wide range of options for movement during your adventures. Even at low levels, it’s not impossible to combine mining with gliding to expand your range of movement while evading monsters.

Just as the tutorial teaches you how to use explosives to destroy walls, “destruction” is a key element of exploration in this game. The map design is excellent, and it’s not uncommon to discover hidden paths or rooms by digging or investigating areas where the terrain seems out of place or catches your attention. The structure of buildings, the unnatural way walls have collapsed, and various other clues all point the way to treasure.

I believe that the “joy of digging” is a vital part of the crafting and survival elements. In this game, mining isn’t just about collecting items—it opens up possibilities for adventure, and the system allows for a certain degree of creativity. I’d definitely recommend this game to anyone who wants to dig holes in the world!

Find Companions and Build a Base

Gathering companions is essential for the reconstruction of Embervale. Like the protagonist, survivors are sleeping inside pods found in the ruins, and you can welcome them to your base by activating these pods. At your base, you can use an item called the “Summoning Staff” to place them at any base of your choice.

Unlocking NPCs grants you access to new crafting recipes. For example, once you unlock the blacksmith—the first NPC to be unlocked—you’ll be able to work with metal and craft more powerful weapons and tools. As you explore the world and find more NPCs, you’ll gain the ability to farm and brew potions, among other things, and they’ll support you on your adventures.

Furthermore, by accepting quests from NPCs, you’ll gain access to more powerful facilities and be able to locate other survivors. In this game, NPCs serve not only as resources for production and as a means to expand your world, but above all, they become reliable companions who support the Flameborn’s solitary journey.

In-game, raising your Flame Level—the game’s progression meter—allows you to establish multiple bases. Since the game has relatively few default fast-travel points, building bases makes it easy to travel to various locations. You can even relocate NPCs with just a single staff, so finding your favorite spots is part of the fun.

Another major appeal of this game is the level of detail in base building. With the right building materials, you can easily construct complex structures—even aerial fortresses. Starting with Version 1.0, a new logic system called “Sparkworks” has been introduced, allowing you to build circuits using switches, which further expands the possibilities for construction.

*Enshrouded: Kingdom of Mist*, which launched in Early Access on January 24, 2024, is finally reaching its official release. The 1.0 update not only adds new biomes and story developments but also significantly expands the game’s content with new architectural styles and improvements to the combat and movement systems.

Even during the Early Access phase, the world was expanded through multiple updates, making both the adventure and crafting quite rewarding. With diverse combat styles, perilous journeys through the mist, mining that gives meaning to the act of “digging,” and the hunt for rare gear, the game offers many unique charms. I highly recommend this title to fans of crafting survival and action RPGs.

The only downside is that some of the Japanese translation feels unnatural. While it doesn’t hinder gameplay, there are certain phrasings that are hard to ignore. Additionally, battles against multiple enemies tend to be particularly challenging, while ranged combat is somewhat easier—which feels like a bit of a waste given the game’s diverse array of equipment.

“Enshrouded: Kingdom of Mist” fully leverages the freedom inherent in a voxel-based game, offering a unique experience where every player can discover their own sources of enjoyment. Now that the official release is finally here, it’s the perfect time to embark on an adventure through this harsh yet beautiful world!
