Mike Crump, studio head at The Coalition—the developer behind *Gears of War: E-Day*, which was released on October 7—told the BBC that the next installment in the series will not require as long a development period as this one.
A Sense of Accomplishment in Delivering a Game Loved by Players
*Gears of War: E-Day* is the latest installment in the cover-based action shooter series. Set 14 years before the original *Gears of War*, which was released in 2006, it depicts the beginning of the battle between humanity and the “Locust,” an alien invading force from beneath the earth.

In his interview with the BBC, Crump noted that this title—which reportedly took six years to develop—will serve as a “great foundation” for future entries in the series. He added that development of the next installment “won’t take nearly as long.”

Meanwhile, amid ongoing staff cuts and organizational restructuring at Xbox, there are reports (from the international media outlet Eurogamer) that staff at The Coalition—a Microsoft subsidiary—are concerned about layoffs following the release of *E-Day*.
When asked about this matter, Crump said he has told both himself and the team that they “need to focus on what we can control,” adding, “What’s important to us is delivering a great game that people love, and I feel we’ve achieved that as a team.”
He also noted that when measuring the success of their latest title, in addition to revenue and player count targets, they place importance on whether the game demonstrates the Xbox’s capabilities and potential. He emphasized that while aiming to create the most visually stunning game on Xbox is a priority, attracting players to Game Pass is also crucial.

The game has also received high praise; as of this writing, the Xbox version holds a Metascore of 87 and a user score of 8.7 on the review aggregation site Metacritic. Additionally, the Steam version surpassed 30,000 concurrent players on October 7, setting a new record for a full-release title in the series on that platform.
Game*Spark has also published a review of this title, so be sure to check it out.
“Gears of War: E-Day” is now available for XBOX Series X|S and PC (Steam and Microsoft Store). On the Microsoft Store, it’s compatible with Game Pass and features Japanese voice acting for the first time in 13 years.
