Jagex, the developer of the “RuneScape” series, announced that it has removed a new “RuneScape” video unveiled at the “RuneFest 2026” event after suspicions arose that generative AI (GenAI) had been used in its creation.

A Knight with “Six Fingers”—Suspicions of Generative AI Use

The issue centers on a trailer for “Dragon Slayer II” that was unveiled at “RuneFest 2026,” held in Birmingham, UK, from October 3 to 4.

After the video was released, users pointed out that the characters’ hands were depicted with “six fingers”—more than usual—and that the soles of the armored characters’ boots had a sneaker-like design. This led to suspicions that the video might have been created using generative AI.

In response, Jagex’s Mod Sween issued a statement atReddit, stating that the trailer in question had been removed and that an urgent investigation was underway.

However, Jagex clarified that it did not instruct the use of generative AI itself. According to the statement, the trailer was produced by a trusted third-party partner, and the company had received explicit confirmation that “generative AI would not be used.”

However, in the footage that was actually released, the characters were depicted with six fingers. Regarding this point, Mod Sween acknowledged, “There are other issues, but there’s the sixth finger. Well, this is quite difficult to explain,” and apologized to users.

In fact, there was another generative AI controversy just a few days ago… Jagex to Review Its Review Process

Furthermore, this incident marked the second issue involving generative AI for Jagex in a short period.

It was revealed that generative AI had also been used in the design of the “Old School RuneScape” collaboration apparel with 100 Thieves, announced in conjunction with “RuneFest 2026.” 100 Thieves acknowledged on October 1 that AI had been involved.

At that time, Jagex had reiterated its stance that it does not use generative AI as a substitute for developers or artists, nor does it permit its use in marketing materials, merchandise, or initiatives with partners. Just a few days later, a similar issue arose with the trailer for “Dragon Slayer II.”

In its latest statement, Jagex reiterated, “We do not use generative AI in the creation of games, artwork, or creative materials, nor do we permit its intentional use on Jagex’s behalf.” The company stated that the fact that issues arose twice in a short period through partners it trusted indicates there are problems within its own processes that need to be addressed.

The company plans to conduct a comprehensive review of its review system following the conclusion of RuneFest. Furthermore, regarding future promotions for “Dragon Slayer II,” the company stated it will commission community creators to produce content and convey the story in a manner befitting the game.
