A town overrun by zombies due to a resurrection potion! A Japanese horror adventure game with intense gore

This title is a horror-splatter adventure game released in April 1992. In addition to the PC-98, it was also released on the X68000, FM TOWNS, MSX2, and PC Engine. One night, the protagonist, Cole, is summoned by his friend, Dr. Cougar, a scientist. The “resurrection serum” the doctor claims to have developed is said to bring the dead back to life. Although he succeeded in actually reviving corpses, the revived individuals retained none of their former personalities and transformed into zombies craving human brains.

Eventually, the test subjects escape, and the dead begin rising from their graves one after another. Set in a city overrun by zombies, a battle for survival begins for Cole and his companions. A major feature of this game is its intense splatter scenes. These have been a defining characteristic since the game’s release and remain a key selling point in the Steam version.

On the Steam store page, it is described as a tribute to 1980s American splatter films and B-grade zombie movies.

The pixel art has been upscaled, and the gameplay—including QTEs—faithfully recreates the original experience.

While the game is primarily a point-and-click adventure, combat against zombies transitions into first-person shooting segments. The game features scenes with a high level of action for an adventure game of that era, such as shooting enemies within a time limit. The Steam version upscales the pixel art while faithfully recreating the original game content as much as possible.

Additionally, quality-of-life features—such as hints when hovering the cursor and indicators showing clickable areas—have been added as options. If you get a “Game Over,” you can now resume not only from your last save point but also from the beginning of the current scene.

On the other hand, since the UI and game systems from over 30 years ago have been faithfully recreated, the controls may feel somewhat clunky compared to modern titles. The game also features music composed using an FM sound source, and a soundtrack DLC is planned for release.

"Dead of the Brain" is scheduled for release on PC (Steam). The release date has not yet been determined.
