On October 2, 2026, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) announced “QuickSpectrum Super Resolution (QSSR),” a new AI upscaling technology for the standard PS5.
AI Super Resolution Achieved on Standard PS5 Through Neural Network Optimization
QSSR is a new technology born from “Project Amethyst,” a collaboration with AMD on AI graphics technology. It is positioned as the next evolution of “PlayStation Spectrum Super Resolution (PSSR),” which had previously been introduced for the PS5 Pro, allowing standard PS5 users—even those without a PS5 Pro—to benefit from high-quality AI super resolution.
PSSR is a technology that analyzes game footage on a pixel-by-pixel basis and uses AI to upscale it to detailed and stable visuals. However, due to limitations in processing power, the standard PS5 was unable to deliver a similar experience.
The newly announced QSSR is based on two key elements: an “efficient neural network architecture” and an “implementation optimized to maximize performance on the standard PS5.”While PSSR remains the top-tier technology on the PS5 Pro, QSSR brings clear improvements in image detail and stability even to the standard PS5.
"Marvel's Wolverine" and "Ghost of Yōtei" Supported via Today's October 2 Patch
Two titles—*Marvel's Wolverine* from Insomniac Games and *Ghost of Yōtei* from Soccer Punch Productions—have been announced as the first to adopt QSSR.For both titles, a patch released today, October 2, adds a QSSR option to the graphics settings on the standard PS5.
Mike Fitzgerald, Chief Technical Officer at Insomniac Games, commented on QSSR as follows:
The team at Insomniac is committed to fully showcasing the capabilities of PlayStation® hardware in every game we develop. We’re thrilled that *Marvel’s Wolverine* will be one of the first titles to bring this new QSSR technology to players.
QSSR ensures that in-game environments are rendered with greater clarity and stability, down to the pixel level. The details of the various locations Logan visits on his epic journey—from the bustling streets of Madripoor to the winding alleys of Shinjuku—will stand out even more. This technology is the perfect fit for the launch of *Marvel’s Wolverine*, and it will allow players on the PS5 to get a taste of what the PS5 Pro experience has to offer.
Personally, I’m thrilled that the PlayStation engineering team continues to evolve the PS5 platform. I’m looking forward to seeing QSSR utilized in even more games in the future!
Jasmin Patry, Lead Rendering Engineer at Sucker Punch Productions, also commented on the effect:
At Sucker Punch, we’re thrilled to bring QSSR to *Ghost of Yōtei* players so they can experience the world we’ve created with even sharper and more detailed visuals.QSSR excels at bringing out the fine details of our characters and landscapes, and its temporal stability in rendering has reached a level previously unattainable on the PS5. We’ve long wanted all PS5 players to experience the stunning image quality that QSSR brings to the PS5 Pro.QSSR is a solid step toward that goal!
QSSR will be made widely available to all developers creating games for PlayStation in the future.

International tech media outlet Digital Foundry also highly praised its potential
Digital Foundry, a tech media outlet that was among the first to conduct approximately six hours of hands-on testing, has highly praised this technology, stating that it “holds incredible potential to resolve the low resolution and rough upscaling issues that plagued many games in the current generation.”

According to the outlet’s testing, *Marvel’s Wolverine* in particular showed significantly improved temporal stability in the visuals, with dramatic improvements in image quality confirmed—including increased detail and a reduction in artifacts such as those caused by swaying leaves.
Furthermore, while noting that the changes in image quality weren’t as dramatic as those in *Marvel’s Wolverine* for *Ghost of Yōtei*—which reportedly already had sufficient image quality to begin with—the outlet reported that the game ran while maintaining a frame rate equivalent to that of standard FSR 3.

While there still appears to be a clear performance gap between PSSR—which leverages the PS5 Pro’s dedicated hardware (300 TOPS)—and QSSR, the latter—which has been optimized for standard and regular PS5 models through the efficient implementation of FP16 operations—seems to be garnering significant anticipation as a powerful option for both existing and future PS5 titles.
