On September 15, Scott Van Vliet, CTO of Xbox, explained the cause and current status of the issue after receiving reports from several Xbox users in Japan that their accounts had been suspended indefinitely.

The best precaution is to purchase from authorized retailers

This issue involved accounts owned by Japanese Xbox users being suddenly suspended indefinitely; reports from multiple users began surfacing on social media around September 12–13.

Regarding this issue, Scott Van Vliet posted an update on his X account. He explained that over the weekend, the Xbox support team took action in accordance with the Xbox Community Guidelines against multiple accounts that had redeemed fraudulent game codes.

The affected codes are believed to have been purchased through resellers, and the report noted that some players redeemed them without realizing they were invalid. Following an investigation, accounts determined to have been unintentionally caught up in the issue have been restored. However, detailed information—such as the source of the affected codes—has not been disclosed.

At the end of his post, Scott Van Vliet urged users to purchase Xbox products, games, and codes from authorized retailers as the best way to avoid getting caught up in issues like this.
